School me on the G-Class ... from a USA perspective

I'm debating between a new Wrangler (JK) Unlimited or a used G500.

I do all my own mechanics, so DIY serviceability is a must (which the Wrangler excels at). Most of my experience is with American cars. I think Japanese are pretty easy too. I'm worried about the German in the G500. I've lived through the mechanical nightmares of VWs: special 1-off tools, re-programming the engine computer after changing a battery, insanely tight spaces for usual service areas, and lack of american-available aftermarket parts for reasonable prices. I'm hoping the G500 is different in this regard because of its military nature.

Also, 2-doors, convertibles, and 5-speeds were never available in the US, right?

How possible would it be to convert a US-spec G500 to a 5-speed?

Any other comments to help sell me?

Thanks!

Interesting. I'm on a Mercedes forum and everyone is definitively telling me to get a Wrangler instead. That's like a waiter recommending you not to get something on the menu - it's wise to take such advice.

It's because of your long list of concerns. You'll obviously be much happier with the Wrangler.

As for myself, I would not have any off-road vehicle other than my G. I've owned and driven one for more than 28 yrs.

To answer one of your questions directly:

The earlier G500s were 5 speed automatics with the later ones 2009+? being 7 speed automatics. The 5 speeds are efficient, smooth and nearly bulletproof, as long as you change the transmission fluid every 60k miles or so. I have two of these with 200k+ on each. They drive exactly as they did when new.

The 7 speeds have, by now had their early bugs worked out and are probably rising to close to the same level of durability.

I have a Unimog so my perspective is a little different. IF you want what everyone else wants, big ass lift, high HP. insane tire size and lots of aftermarket options, then a jeep is the way to go. especially if your planning for short term ownership. If you want a very reliable excellent built machine that will outlast you ..then a G maybe a great option for you. I'm thinking of down sizing in size from my Unimog to a G, I don't want the jeep because everyone has one, but I like the idea of one because its smaller and will fit down the jeep trails a little easier.
