Just been to Geneva Motor Show - hands-on look at new RR - keeping my G

Quite interesting - MB had a Fully Loaded 270CDI, and RR had a new 3.O Liter TD6.

The basic G's sticker is $52,000, the Range's $58,000, but the loaded G and some option on the Range brought them both to virtually the same - $65,000.

Which one looks like it will last forever? The G is an icon, like a Boeing aircraft, built sensibly to last forever, the Range looks stylistically frivolous, change for change's sake on the basic design, for the third time now.

G is built by Mercedes, founded 1886.

RR is built by Ford, with a BMW engine in a Rover design. A camel is a horse designed by a committee.

You choose.
I have!

besides i think that the engine of the RR is to small for the weight of the car. Besides the RR is made to two things in highays, not to do 4 x 4. The g is made for everything.

New RR has lost its seperate frame and solid axles

The new RR has opted for a no seperate frame, and switched to a four wheel independent suspension design (I understand the the M class will ultimately do the same).

These changes seem to defy what I know about heavy-duty. Could someone enlighten me about this trend toward turning these vehicles in to heavy cars? Is this driven by the fact that few are used as heavy haulers or by fuel consumption and enviromental standards? Oddly, I read that the new RR weighs 200 pounds more than the one it is replacing.

Re: New RR has lost its seperate frame and solid axles

Well, I think the new RR is a huge step forward compared to it's predecessor ( ok, this was a lemon ) and I think it will be a success for those, who don't like a G-Wagon because it is not comfortable enough, or has not enough airbags or who 'hate' MB or whatever .......
It is completely new from the frame - monocoque - and that it will survive heavy off road driving and hauling very heavy loads - boats ... - they made the chassis stronger, 150% more stiffness than the one before. That's the main reason, why the car is now in the area ( 2.5 tons Empty !!!) of a G-Wagon.
Isn't that interesting ???
( British crap now improved from German engineering <BMW> ).
Let's see how they work in reality. Maybe they won't burn down so fast .......
