plan to change engine from my '88 300GD (88hp) to an M110 with fuel injection (abt 180 hp) as used in S-class or W-123. Donor for the engine will probably a 280E or 280SE, I will take from a running car, to make sure motor is running fine. need all available advice on what trouble i can expect, points of intrest are :
* Wiring, is fuel-injection wiring, separated from rest of wiring ?
* radiator, can I use my current radiator and tubes
* Fuel tank, e.g. fuel-pump installation
* exhaust

FYI I like this swap as the 300D has a lack of power for off-roading fun (main purpose), I would like to change to a diesel-motor with better specs, but these are hard to get and expensive, while a 80-85 S-class can be obtained for around 1000 USD (well running !!)
There may be issues regarding the oil pan design. I think the G 280 engine is designed to keep the oil pump from starving for oil when you are doing the tricks shown in the pictures accompaning your posting. There are several people on this board who likely know all about these considerations - Dutch, Harold, Jason, to name a few. I suspect the torque curve is different (cam timing) on a car engine, but that may be due to compression differences and the assumption that in the outback (where the G might find itself more often) is of a lesser grade than you would find in more populated areas. Good luck. I agree, the more modern diesel engine would be the best choice.
Hi Rene!

You might should also contact Alan Hüsgen from south africa - he have also build in an M110 from a 280SE into his 230GE. I think he can give you some tips what is needed to change.

Greetings, Arnd
Personally I would not attempt a transplant.There would be so many problems to overcome. Electrics ,fuel pump ,gearbox differences, cooling, modifying saloon engine to G specification ,air intake ,exhaust.The diff ratio would be incorrect for the new engine too.
I would by a 280 g and sell the diesel (Swapping the parts you wanted to keep)It depends how much time you have to spend converting it .
Roly
There a guy that used to hang around here that took an existing 280GE and replaced it with a long block 280 engine rebuilt to European PKW specifications. He had to use his old flywheel and oil pan. Other than that, it was a drop in with about 35-40 more housepower. He was very pleased.
