Fuel tanks and protection

Hi,

I am sick and tired of trying to come up with a good protection plate for the G fuel tank. There is just no good places to mount the plate to.
Any good ideas for that?

I've been thinking of removing the original tank, making one that fits between the frame ladder and thin enough to not fall below the frame and making one additional tank to cover for the lost capacity on top of one wheel well inside the back.
What you think, would that work?

Tomi
-82 GD300 LWB

Tomi,

My questions are out of ignorance of your situation..

Which tank are you referring to? The main tank, or the 'extra' capacity tanks that exist above and behind the main tank?

What specifically are you trying to protect it from?
Re: Fuel tanks and protection

I only have the original main tank, no aux tanks fitted. The original tank falls rather low and is totally unprotected. When you take the car off-road, any rocks, trees, cliffs etc. will destroy the tank. This needs to be protected either with a shield that can carry the cars weight and supported agaist the frame or by taking the tank somewhere out of reach of anything that can break it.

Unless there is something that I have not thought of yet...

Tomi

Tomi, check link out

There are several fuel tank protectors available...some would just prevent damage from scraping others are more substaintial mounting to frame...see if the rear hitch with under protection gives you any ideas (scroll down link page and there will be some pictures)...

Re: Fuel tanks and protection

Marco,

I have not personally seen the original one, but I've been told that is just a thin shield that is not supported by the frame. The tank at the moment has no shield at all.

What I need is a protection plate that can take the car (axle) weight when dropped from a stone (10-20 inches) and the car drops to a stone and the only thing taking the drop is the fuel tank (shield) to an area of a palm.

Do you have any pictures of the original tank shield? Is it strong enough and does it lean against the frame or the tank?

Thanks,

Tomi

Re: Fuel tanks and protection

The original is no heavy enough for your requirements. What you really need is a skid plate; and some folks do make these for the G.
