Wierd Sounds from G-Wagen

Hi, I am an owner of a 1981 280GE, and I took it offroading last night for my first time. As I got off of the track my front Left wheel is making some HORRID noise! I thought these G-wagens were supposed 2 be really tough! If anyone else has had this problem or has an IDea of whawt this problem is, i'd greatly appreciate your help!
*Camille

It's not like a constant noise, it occurs like every 2-3 seconds and lasts for 5 or so... could it be a broken shock, or messed up brakes?! I'm 16, and this 280GE is my first car, I absolutely Love this car and I hope I havent messed it up too badly.. My dad would kill me if i have messed it up!

It could be possibly be the universal joint in the front axle is giving up.Or the wheel bearings are in trouble. My guess Either way U might have to strip down the left hub.DONT DO THIS IF U HAVE NEVER TOUCHED A WRENCH.Get a competant mechanic to do this and i belive somone posted here a link to the Merc G wagen shop manual on CD,for $75.Well worth having. There is a sampler page on how the UV jounts in the hubs work.
Going by the age of the Wagen it is was proably going to happen if it hasnt been properly serviced.Just tell your dad even the best wears out as well!!!!!
