I HAVE A 230GE 1983 OR 84. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME WITH THE PROCEDURE AND SPECS ON HOW TO SET THE TIMING ON MY 230GE USING A TIMING LIGHT.

Hello REY,
The specifications for ignition timing on the 230 GE is as follows:
-Remove vacuum advance line from the distributor, if the vehicle has a automatic transmission, remove the
second vacuum line too.
- Rev and hold the engine to 4500 RPM (ouch!!) and check the ignition timing.
- Premium unleaded fuel is 30 degrees BTDC
- Regular unleaded fuel is 25 degrees BTDC
- Adjust if necessary by adjusting the distributor.
- Install vacuum lines.
Regards,
Jason

Hi, Jason.
That prompted me to want to double-check my engine for proper timing, too -- '84 280GE LWB with automatic transmission. Is the procedure and specifications the same?
The reason is that this past summer (warm weather), I sometimes noticed some ping (at which point I would back off, of course), especially pulling my boat trailer up long highway upgrades in 3rd gear. The ping would only start at about 4,000 rpm, never below that speed.
Thanks very much.
Ken C.

: Hi, Jason.
: That prompted me to want to double-check my engine for proper timing, too -- '84 280GE LWB with automatic transmission. Is the procedure and specifications the same?
The sticker on the valave cover of my 1984 LWB 280GE with manual tranny gives the following test specs:
At 3500RPM and the vacuum line disconnected: 32 degrees BTDC.
At 800 RPM Idle speed and the vacuum line connected: 12 degrees BTDC.
I've never checked the high RPM value and set the idle timing at 15 degrees BTDC using mid range (89 octane)unleaded.
If you're having problems at 4000RPM, it would probably behoove you to check the high speed idle.
AC must be off and auto tranny in N or P.
