Transmission fluid leak

Every time I check (2-3 months), the transmission fluid in my 81 300GD is low and must be filled. Just for my own knowledge, does anyone have any idea where to begin to look for the leak? Where are the typical points that a leak could occur? Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Transmission fluid leak

Auto or manual trans?
Basically, it can leak anywhere something penetrates the case. Drain plugs, linkage shafts, in or output shafts, pan gasket (if auto).
If you're in a dry climate, for at least a short period of time, you can dust the outside of the case with talcum powder. That way the whole trans will have a uniform, dry, dusty, white appearance (and totally free from diaper rash!) and any leak will be very obvious, soaking the talcum in a definite area.
Do the talc dusting, and check the trans after every drive until you start to see a leak.
-Dave G.

Re: Transmission fluid leak

A typical place on manualls at least, is where the driveshaft runs out of the main gearbox. There is supposed to be a washer here, but they tend to wear out. Mine leaks to, should take 2 liters, but when I change or check there is never more than one liter of oil left. I'll save the repair for when I have time for a complete overhaul of the box!
Best of luck!
-IVER-
Norway

Thanks for all the good advice

It sounds like a lot of work to find out the leak and to repair it.
