I am looking to update my car to "look" as new as possible. I have a USA 05 g55. I already replaced the lights with the depot xenon lights. Now I am wondering if I can just purchase a newer 07+ g55 instrument cluster (has separate white faced speedo, tachometer, etc) and plug it into my current car?

I'm wondering if the wiring/plugs are all the same? Would I need star diag to configure anything? Would it just be plug and play? Or would I need to splice wires and update the computer?

anyone try this? any advice would be appreciated.

looking at epc, the new instrument cluster is 4635406611 while my old one is 4635403611

looking at your garage, you seem to have both 06 & 10 g55s. The instrument panels are easy to remove. if you could, just take a look back to see if the connectors are the same and if so, try plugging it in to see what happens.

the depots are plug and play. no splicing of wires required. I did a write up on here, so do a search.

I Have G55 2007
and i installed the new odometer 2008+
and everything working except the mileage it doesn't show in the new odometer i took the car to the dealer and they said no sorry we cant do modifications, and i took the car to many mercedes-benz specialised and they tried but nothing showed up, they used star diagno and every tools
let me know if you come with an idea

For obvious reasons of it appearing as a odometer rollback that they don't want any part of it. I just had my cluster replaced under warranty due to a fading display. Retail on the replacement cluster was $2,150.02.

I certainly don't have the means to drop that kinda dough on a cluster mod.

On my (non-US) G, I used the star system to change from metric to US measurements. In the process it asked if I understood that, paraphrased: "once set to the US settings that the odometer could only set to higher values, and never backwards (OK?)".

You might try finding a more friendly shop and bring both the old and new clusters, just so they know that nothing illegal is going on.

No need to bring both clusters, the mileage is stored in the CGW and ECU as well. It's a two step process - the new cluster has to be married to the DAS (drive authorization system) - this can only be done once - and then the mileage can be set to a value equal to or greater than that in the ECU.

If the cluster is not married, the odometer displays 5 dashes or 5 stars depending on the version. Supposedly, if a specific number of miles (or time?) passes without the cluster being married to the car, it can no longer be married.

Any dealer *can* do this, but most will not unless they also supply the new cluster.

No idea on a G, but on the R171, the new clusters work fine in the older cars - even the new AMG will work in an original release R171 non-AMG.

I took the old cluster to the Mercedes shop to see the map and compare it with the new cluster and still the car there they are still finding solution, to make the NEW cluster can read the mileage from the ESI which is showing 32000 Miles,
they connect the ZERO mile new cluster to the car and the computer showing ( unknow data ) and they trying to switch the wire to see if it will going to works
and still not yet

I contact my dealership again and there answer was ( you cant instal 2008 cluster ti 2007 car ) !!!!
I dunno what to do I bought it for 1500$ and there is no returns to an open used item I

well, I have decided to purchase a cluster anyways. The problem is there are numerous versions, all with different manufacturer designations. The 07s are different from the 08s, the 08s different from the 09s and the 09s different from the 10s! (I already know that in 07 , the first part of the year had the old style, while the later builds had the new style). There is no stock of the cluster in the US, so it will have to be ordered from europe- I was told about 4 weeks to get to me.

My speedometer guys says it shouldn't be a problem though. I'll keep everyone posted.

Who is your source/supplier of the cluster? A MB dealership or similar authorized distributor of MB parts? I ask because I took my truck in last month for a fading display and the dealship had the cluster shipped to them by the next day. I was without my truck one night.

SUCCESS!!

well, after not listening to all the naysayers ;) , I decided to give it a try. I had to go to 2 speedometer places, 2 mercedes repair shops, 2 mercedes dealers to get it to work. In the end, I borrowed a star diagnostic and tinkered with the menus to finally get it to work correctly!

The first speedometer place said it could be done. Once I started to ask about the odometer, he just scratched his head. I went to the second speedometer place and they said they didn't have the proper computer. Both mercedes repair shops said they didn't know how to get the odometer to read correctly. The 1st dealer said they don't do modifications. The second dealer said they wanted to charge me $280 just to take a look. Once they did, they said he couldn't get it to adapt.

I was about to throw in the towel, when I found someone with a star diagnostic unit. We had to go through three different versions until I got it to recognize everything.

Take a look at the iphone pic. Since I look at the display cluster every single day, for every minute that I drive, I am SO GLAD I did the mod. The car looks just like a 2010 unit now- I got the depot xenons, new cluster, upgraded chrome grill, rear camera mount, upgraded rear lights.

do you think you can explain to us how you figured it out with the Star Diagnostic also some may not believe including I that if its true can you take a pic of the speedometer and steering wheel view showing your steering wheel and new gauges to show that you have a updated gauge work thanks ...Nice job by the way you answer a lot of people question as if it can be done I wouldnt be surprise if I saw a 2002 fully upgraded to a 2010 look from exterior to interior.:)

well if you find it in the salvage yard, it depends how many miles are on the odometer. If cluster mileage > than your car, you will need to hack it. If cluster odometer < than your car, then, you will still need to hack, but not as bad. The reason is that there is a hard lock after 25km put on an odometer and you need to hack it to work around the lock.

Question can you use a speedometer cluster from different model or it has to be from G-Wagon also do you have the part number for that Amg instrument cluster???

notice the old steering wheel with the new cluster.
[/QUOTE]

I can tell you from experience, the G is a C-class electronically, I have changed parts from heater controls to AC compressor and have not had an issue since, I had already ordered a cluster from 07 even before he had confirmed that the mileage is doable, I was/am content without mileage showing, , remember that in the C-class that cluster came out MY 05, I should have it in a few days, can let you know what happens :) I do not believe OP answered some q';s that have been asked over and over again. I'm sure he shall chime in with time.

forget all that amergedon talk about mileage, the right person will marry your mileage, check this out

I just wish I had STAR boy the stuff I would do with it lol
Oh yeah and those ebay used keys CAN be programmed, check this out, I know coz I have had it done before, I think MB is just cracking down on fellas. Check this out...

you need to know the right person as sc_trojan has shown :)

So I got my cluster from 07 C-class. First of all it sticks out too far, the G's dash is kinda short :( Other than that one can use the G's facia and it will fit.

Speedo--- check
RPM --- check
Outside temp -- check
Engine Temp --- check
Steering wheel controls-- check
Date and Time are changeable independent of command unit, you change it with the steering wheel controls( great for those with aftmkt Navi)
When you turn rear wiper on, it shows a wiper rectangular icon just above the outside temp

Audio does not show, it just shows AUDIO. so you cannot change stations or advance CD tracks coz they don't show.

Mileage--- nope, it first showed cluster mileage when I first plugged it in though
Fuel gauge-no go, I had over 1/2 tank and it showed 1/8, turned car off and on, now showes red and empty. This is a biggy!!!! It however shows trip correctly.

it also shows digital speedo and mpg's too

other controls like convenience features are changeable.

So next step is first to figure out this mileage and gas gauge, really those are the only two hang ups before I can dismantle my original fascia. sc_trojan this is where you come in :) help a fellow out.

Well, if you just remove old and plug in new without any star adaptation, you are correct. What you need to do is get a hold of star and marry the new cluster to the DAS. Once you do that, you need to set the mileage from the ECU. You can do this without any hacking if new cluster mileage less than 50km AND new cluster mileage less than what is stored in ecu (which should be the case).

If your new cluster is greater than 50km, then you need to hack the cluster back to zero. I won't go into how to do this because this is illegal (odometer rollback) and violates both state and federal laws. Note, it can be done, but you need to get past a few locks/safeguards.

hopefully your new cluster is less than 50km, so all you need is a star and you should be fine.

in terms of getting audio back into the cluster, you just need to star to set it in the loop. same with cd changer.
