Nitto Tire has partnered with Mercedes performance specialist, RENNtech, to help create a specially tuned rally race Mercedes GLK Hybrid as part of Mercedes-Benz's GLK-SEMA Tuner Challenge in which it placed first. This competition challenged four different tuners to create outrageously different GLK project cars, which were on display at the 2008 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA).

The next competition for the Nitto-sponsored RENNtech GLK Hybrid project car is the 87th Annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb which will be held July 19, 2009.

Race modifications include:
- 72 Volt electric-assist mild hybrid drive
- Engine upgrade (new intake manifold, cylinder heads, cams and ECU software
- Fully adjustable race suspension
- 16.2" Front rotors w/ 8-piston calipers, 14" rear brake rotors w/ 4-piston calipers
- Weight reduction using Carbon Fiber

To increase downforce on the Pikes Peak course, RENNtech added a fully functional front splitter, rear diffuser and wing. To get proper wheel and tire clearance, RENNtech added fender flares. These allow the 3-piece 5-spoke RENNtech wheels, to be wrapped with Nitto's newest max-performance street tire the NT05, sized 275/40ZR20 in the front and 315/35ZR20 in the rear.
