thanks for the thoughful reassuring response, musikmann -- however, in my research, i have found the following from the benzo website indicating that the cpo coverage does include trip interruption reimbursement:
When you buy a Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle, you receive much more than a fine automobile. You also reap the benefits of nationwide customer service and technical support that every Mercedes-Benz owner enjoys.
With 1-800-FOR-MERCEDES (1-800-367-6372) you are only a phone call away from 24-hour Roadside Assistance, Sign and Drive services (a free jump-start, flat-tire change with your existing spare, or some fuel for an empty tank), Trip Interruption and trip routing, product and technical information or anything else related to your Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Exchange Privilege
Every Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is sold with a 7-day/500-mile Exchange Privilege*. If you are not satisfied, return within 7-days/500 miles (which ever comes first), and the Authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealer will exchange it with another Certified Pre-Owned vehicle of equal or greater value (if the buyer wishes to pay the difference).
* See your Mercedes-Benz Dealer for details.
Trip Interruption
Part of Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance, the Trip Interruption program reimburses** you for expenses up to $300 per day for up to three days in the event of a warranty-covered breakdown occurring more than 100 miles from home and causing an unexpected stay overnight.
**Reimbursement for actual documented meal, lodging and substitute transportation expenses incurred while your Mercedes is repaired at an authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealership.
Mercedes-Benz Dealer Support
Your Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle is supported by more than 300 authorized Mercedes-Benz Dealers nationwide, all of whom honor the standard Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty and Extended Limited Warranties.
1-800-FOR-MERCEDES
Whether you need Roadside Assistance, product information, or you just can't remember how to program the radio, this is the magic number to call, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Lots of authorties here on the 2002, some are authorties on everything, I have an 02 and due to all the negative posts, I bought certified and as well the extended waranty. I probably would purchase certified again, however I doubt I would spring for the waranty. If you plan to sell it before the waranty is up it is probably an asset. The condition of the car is more important than the year. By now an 02 is either broke or fixed so if you like it buy it. The waranty, by the way, is just like a new car waranty. Including a loaner if needed.

Get an 07 then. It will have some updates, including HID headlamps. An 07 is much better then an 02 or 03.
