2002 G500

I've always loved the G and I think they are priced low enough now to use as a daily driver.

What are some common problems of the 2002 G500? Also how much does maintainence cost for this car?

I was also thinking of replacing the stick navi unit with someone different. Has anyone done this yet?

Thanks

Be careful with a 2002 - many consider it to be the low point in G production. Better to get a 2000 or 2004+

What should I be careful for?

And why would the 2000 be a better choice than the 2002?

Thanks

In a nut shell, 2002's are prone to major electrical problems. It was the first year in the U.S. for the new electronics, and there were more than a few bugs. The links that saigonsmuggler provided will take you into much more depth on the subject and what to look for.

Cheers,
Ben

People freak out when I drive into the shop with a perfectly good Mercedes, only to start cutting it up for parts. I just tell them that something has to die inorder to keep all of the other Benz's running.

icanfly,

I suggest you keep your options open because a Europa G-class would be a great option as well.

I own a 1997 G-class Cabrio w/powertop, 1995 G320 LWB, 1993 G300GE 3.6 liter Brabus edition and in my opinion they fit my particular aspirations of what I need in a G-class.

I also owned a 1986 280GE and it was great vehicle as well, but I sold it in March 2007 because owning four G-class vehicles and being in Iraq for one year was too much for a burden to put on my parents to maintain the vehicles at their home.

I decided in January 2007, after a year in Iraq to volunteer again and stay here in Baghdad, Iraq until April 2008 and sacrifice my 1986 280GE.

There are many options you have if you chose to modify a W461 G-class to fit your aspirations as you can see from the photo below is a photo of my 1986 280GE before I drove it to Westchester County to sell it to Ira a member here on Benzworld.

In closing, I suggest you keep your options open and look at a Europa G-class and stay clear of an MBUSA G-class.

I've purchased my 2002 G500 in Feb, 2007, but haven't had much problem except the transfer case neutral error message that occured once in a while. I guess the transfer case issue is not only applied to 2002 model.

My 2002 G500 was manufactured in Apr. 2002.
I think there are 2002 models that were made in 2001.
I would avoid those 2002 models if the 2002 were known as pain-in-the-aXX.

My advise is to drive at least half-dozen of Gs and pick which one you would buy. And ask for Mercedes service history if the dealership has an access to it.

Good luck

I have had my '02 for only 2 months, and the only thing I found wrong with it is that the passenger door would not lock. The rod was slightly bent, so the fix took 15 minutes and cost nothing.

Our '98 E320 is in the shop about every three months generally to the tune of $300 to $1500 (getting a new AC compressor as we speak), and that's including the fact that I do as much work as I can (brakes, window regulators, blower resistor, etc). We keep it only to give to our daughter to learn to drive in as it seems to be a pretty safe car, and it's a competent car to drive. In contrast, our 2002 Ford Excursion Diesel has only had oil changes in the last four years - not one single repair. At 77k miles still on the factory original brakes - not bad for a 7000 lb vehicle that tows now and then.

Steve
