Compare and contrast: 2004 G-500 vs. mid 1990's LR D90
Hi, I've been a fan of both of these vehicles for some time now. I've driven the D90 on two occasions (one was a test drive back in 1997 - should've bought it back then) and of a used one recently. I've yet to drive the G500, but will venture out this weekend and get a test drive from the local MB dealer. Anyone own either of these vehicles? I've searched the archives, and found useful information, but I'd like any objective input.
I currently own a 2002 Toyo 4runner, so I'm used to driving a truck on a daily basis. I'll be selling the garage queen Porsche Boxster S to fund either purchase.
The D90 is a purpose built fun toy. As i two have always wanted one i would never buy one. You will only find them in two shapes. 1) like new and $$$$$$ and 2) four wheeled to death.
Think of the D90 as a hard core jeep wrangler. Most dont have air, you could not get an auto until 97, etc etc... just real no way to compair them. The G is more of a S class benz with a kick ass 4x4 system..
i have owned both. it would be like comparing your boxter to a bmw 5 series.
call dealers, LR dealers still try and stock D90s. drive both the D90 and the G500 around the block. that will tell you all you need to know about which one you want. my opinion after years of owning both could have been predicted from the first turn i took in them at the dealer.
next year, LWB d110 coming to the US! they are essentially the old ones, with a more upscale interior and a newer looking hood. i think there in the 50k range, my freind owns a d90, his bro, a series one disco, his mom, a series 2 disco, and the dad should be getting one shortly. Give landrova a call.
I owned a D 90 2002 . Nice truck ! A very reliable truck. A very realible diesel engine ( it was an non eletronic 4 cilinders one). A very rustic truck. I introduced ARB rear diff locker and it was nice off road.
I own now a GE 300 /91 and i can garantee that its much , much better in off road than LR 90D. On road its impossible to compair a truck like a GE with a rustic D 90.
I own a G500 05 , the power and torque of this truck can bring you in places where the other two will not arrive.....trust me !!!! I can say that the GE will almost arrive !!
Off course all depends on the person behind the stering......
As some have said above...D90s & G500s don't compare, other than being 4x4s. I have had both, and as recently as this month have thought about buying a 90. But frankly, age, service, parts or lack there of, (some are not available anymore, even in Europe) keep me away.
For an ALL ROUNDER, you CANNOT go wrong with the G. As for the Defender coming back b/f 2009/10..don't count on it. Yes the new 90 has a LR3 type interior now, but still no airbags, and engine to use in the North American market. I know, hard to believe. But it's true. Plus LR/Ford will not foot the cost of redesigning the bulkhead/firewall to accomodate a new powerplant. Sad really. I would buy one in a heartbeat if it was available and $35-40K. The next 90 will not be a real 90. Back to your original query...Go with GGGGGGGGG.
Vehicle: 1993 Range Rover Classic/ like to add 300GD LWB......

Where did you get this information? I have not heard anything of the sort!
My next door neighbour back in the UK had five Land Rovers/Range Rovers, despite his wife moaning and whinging about his meagre salary going on keeping so many trucks. He convinced me that he needed all of them, because, 2 of them were in the workshop at any point in time, 1 was too rusty to pass an MOT (mandatory technical inspection) and one would break down at any point in time. So he basically needed the fifth one to be able to drive. Needless to say that his backyard looked like an abandoned scrapyard
All of which takes me to the most basic question, one whose replay any Brit would understand inmediately:
Would you compare ANY Rover product to ANY Mercedes?
Would you compare ANY Ford to ANY Mercedes?
Why do you Americans insist on comparing that bag of cr@p to our beloved G?
This is not correct. LR has said publically that the Defender will return on or about 2010. Not before..! TOTALLY NEW VEHICLE..! CERTAINLY NOT THE D110/90 that we all know and enjoy currently. I have spoken to LR in the UK, LRNA and dealers alike. All have NO knowledge of a return b/f this timeframe. Sorry. But at $50K I would be a buyer. By the way, which "websites" have you seen positive confirmation..? Please post. Thanks.
