Trailer hitch modification??

Does anyone have experience converting the standard( I assume) trailer hitch to a common receiver type. I need to use a 2 5/16 diam. ball. Here's a picture of my hitch

The European hitch is held in place with four (4) bolts & nuts. You'll have to remove it and get a custom weld job done to make a receiver to bolt on in its place.

I'm pretty sure that Europa International used to have these. Maybe there are still some around.

RE: Trailer hitch modification??

This is the modification on mine. The ball was cut off just above where it was welded and a short receiver tube was welded in here. Two holes were drilled into the lower area to connect safety chains, shackles and the like to the unit. It was welded inside and out. Ultra strong, I have pulled unbelievably hard from that point. An inexpensive modification you can do locally. Receiver tube can be purchaced at truck/trailer supply stores. Six States in my area has several lengths and most Napa auto parts will stock some different choices. Go for strong tubes, there are differences in the wall thickness and rating. You can then buy from a selection of receiver drop lengths and hole sizes. A 2 5/16 inch uses a rather large diameter shaft.
