The swedish company STT, now STT Emtech http://www.sttemtec.com/ used to sell turbo kits for the old 460 series. It seems like they've changed their focus, and now sells kits for engine manufacturers, agents and retailers. There was no mention on avaliable performance kits at their website.
The swedish company GIK Turboteknik http://www.gikturbo.se also had a kit for the 463 300GD, but I couldn't find it on their page.
The GIK turbokits were rather expensive - around 30000 SEk ($3000) or so.
I gave up on an aftermarket turbo, since they were no longer available for the OM617, and got a medium mileage turbo engine from a station wagon and bought a new exhaust kit. It cost me around $2000 or so in parts. (On my '86, with a OM617). With the labor, I'll end up around $3000.
For less than half the price of the turbo kit you can buy a whole used OM617A turbodiesel engine here in the USA. When you do that, you get all the improvements that MB found necessary to achieve the legendary longevity of the 617A with the turbo. Those improvements are significant inclucing revised pre-chambers, oil-spray piston cooling, and more things that can't be retrofitted to the 617 in a turbo kit.
If you're starting with a G300D, it's just a matter of pulling out the old motor, swapping the anciliaries over, fitting a radiator from a 280GE, re-balancing the flywheel to match the new motor, buttoning it all back up, and fitting new exhaust.
The better engine for your G would be the 0m603a out of a 87 300D turbo since you have a 91 463.That was rated at 147Hp in Europe. US models got a lot of smog gear fitted. Its a 6 cylinder
The 617a is a cast iron engine. Block and cylinder head. It is engineered for the turbo from the bottom up. It was designed for at least three service intervals of 350,000 or so miles each with minimal cost. It has mechanical injection and no (NO) computer(s). It develops around 124 HP and has plenty of power. Reliable power. The motors are very available used and easily rebuilt with relative low cost.
