I dont' know on the G, but on our 2003 C240, which I believe has the same comand system as the G, there is an input already installed. It's a standard 3.5mm stereo phono jack located in the side of the glove box. At first look it appears to be a rivit or screw, but look closer and you'll see it's a jack. Works great!
Hopefully someone with specific experience on the new G's can say for sure.
The G has an auxiliary input available on the rear connector of the Command, but it is not wired up to anything . You have to order a cable from MB, it's not very expensive. If you are comfortable with soldering your own, then you just need to find some pins to put in the connector shell, or I think you can order just the pins from MB. If you do a search on this forum there are drawings showing the connector pinouts.
Unfortunately, it takes several button pushes to selct the auxilary input, as you discovered. Makes it hard to switch around between that input and the other audio sources. But at least it's there.
While I was working on a Terratrip install I needed to locate the CANBUS input for speed. Dave helped to locate it and apparently it is located in the same plug that handles the AUX input. It is the C2 connector right about in the center of the back of the command unit.
If you have the G500 2003 technical instruction CD, the procedure how to take the console apart and how to remove the Command unit is shown in small video clips. http://www.4x4abc.com/G-Class/463newUSA.html
Here is what mb230 wrote me:
FYI - if anybody wants to add aux input for ipod/xm/etc - Harald is pointing to the "C2" connector where the wiring is installed.
04 - aux in right
05 - aux in GND
13 - aux in left
14 - aux in shield (or aux in GND left)
You can buy the entire cable and pins from MB, it is cheaper to get a generic radio shack cable and cut one end off. You'll still need the pins from MB.
The pin # is -
008-545-55-26
The official cable is
210-440-50-05

(ignore the arrow in the first image - its just to show the shape of the plug and ignore the #, it is the speed signal)

I've been off-line a lot - but if you need somebody to hook up the aux input I can do it in my sleep.
