These electronic watchdogs were not available until model year '02 with the possible exception of ESP on some earlier models but not '98. I have ridden in vehicles with both and own '99 without and '02's with. I much prefer the '99 without but it is a matter of personal preference. All the above years have ABS.
I don't think and I'm pretty sure that ModellYear 98 had NO ESP (or the other stated features).
I found that only from 2001 onwards MB fitted ESP
standard in the G-class.
And especially if you know that only from 1999 ML series were fitted with ESP. http://www.whnet.com/4x4/esp_pr99.html

The M-Class was developed from the start with ESP. So, with the introduction in May 1997, ESP was standard on all M-Class. I wrote the book in 1997 - so I know it inside and out.
And you are right, ESP was introduced in the G-Class in 2001 for the 2002 model year.
maybe the best way to put it (because there is sometimes variation between model year and registration date here in the US) that if it has the updated interior it has all those systems. If it has the 1990's style interior, it has only ABS. ESP was a system I specifically did not want becuase of my driving style, but it does have it's purpose for many.
They all do something different: ESP, electronic stability program (ESC with most other manufacturers) ensures you continue going the direction you intended. More on my site; http://4x4abc.com/esc-easy.html 4ETS, electronic traction system,(TCS/ETC with most other manufacturers) reduces wheel spin and ensures general vehicle stability. http://www.4x4abc.com/ML320/ml320_4ETS.html
The combination of ESP and 4ETS create more stable, somewhat safer, driving conditions. BAS, brake assist system, creates a much higher stopping force for emergencies than most drivers are ever able to generate. By doing so BAS helps to prevent accidents

I think harald had ESP keep the vehicle staight when he was towing something and had to do an emergency stop. I think it might be useful if you were tired or drunk and heading into a corner to fast... then realized it and jerked the wheel hard enough to risk rolling or fishtailing.
Without the systems the truck slides sideways quite predictably. If you go into a turn slowing down it can slide all wheels and the rear will come out a little, but not unpredictably.
Flip side is if you like to head into turns faster and are going down hill on long windy roads it'll keep hitting the brakes and risk warping your rotors without you ever touching the brake pedal (such as if you know well enough to use enginer braking as appropriate).
One way to put it is that the brakes on this truck are adequate, but certainly not oversized. A couple of us have bought our truck with 30-40k miles and found it had warped rotors when we got it and our trucks didn't have ESP and our trucks do have the exact same brakes as the 2005's so ESP could likely cause warpage if you don't watch it and depending on the roads.
If i turn right at a light or stop sign and really get on the gas (to enter traffic for example), i've had the wheel spin through to second gear. What i wonder is if ETS will actually brake the wheel and allow enough throttle to actually allow more power to get to the other wheels, or if it reduces power simultaneously and doesn't result in any faster acceleration.
1.Can I to install new extra fuel tank (i heard from Mercedes dealer it has 88l) in G500?
2.Is there any company or online shop sell Xenon/Zenon bulb for headlamp and off-road foglamp?
3.Is there any online VIN number decoder?
