Timing setting

I have the I-4 engine in my 79. The timing was way off when I got this so I set the timing by ear to get it started and running in fair condition. Can someone tell me what the proper timing is to be, and in addtion does anyone advance the timing for altitude? If it should be advanced for altitude how many degrees per 1000 feet?
