These are some more pics of the 1997 290GTD 461 that I'm considering importing. The seller says he's selling the car because of tax reasons.
So my question is, after looking at these pics, what do you think is wrong with the G? I'm not extraordinarily familiar with the interior craftsmanship/build of the W460 and W461 (although I assume it's top notch), so if something looks out of place point it out.
In my opinion, the car is a bit too costly - the seller wants $26,000 for it when it has 120,000 miles on the odometer. Also, the seat design looks more like seat covers (what's he hiding?) and he says he's put in a new engine (that makes me suspicious).
After going through all the documentation on importing a vehicle, I'm having some doubts on whether or not this is really worth it. If anyone in Europe is interested in this vehicle, I'll forward them the seller's contact information.
... and he says he's put in a new engine (that makes me suspicious).
...
For what it is worth, my G300DT came with a newer engine also. Redlining a IDI diesel down the autoban all day is just about guaranteed to kill it (as discussed in a recent thread). It is possible that the DI diesels may be somewhat more robust in this aspect.
That being said, there are plenty of warning signs with this vehicle. The seat covers and steering wheel cover alone would worry me. Maybe the parts below are pristene, but I doubt it. First thing I would do as a seller is to show off how good the usual wear spots look.
I am more partial to the electronic locking differentials that are available in the current 461s.
[:D]
But that's not to say that I am not fighting the temptation to go to TN and have a closer look at the car. Plus, the car is a little costly for it being a 1986 model and having a bit of miles on the clock. [}:)] [:D]

Is it California legal?
The seller noted that:
As of 2/23/05, new belts have been installed, the valves have been adjusted, new spark plugs were installed, fuel filters were replaced and the routine oil change was done. It's plain to see that this is a well cared for and very clean 280 GE.
Concerning the miles and the price I think it will still come out cheaper than importing the Gwagen that you were interested in, and also TENN is attainable to visit for a day by plane.
the 290GTD 461 does not come with electronic diff locks, only the 461 worker and the military version of the 461 have this. Does it say that the seats are MB tex. If so I guess he used seat covers as they can be a bit slippy and cold in the winter. But looking at the seat covers and the wheel cover my guess he is an elderly gentlemen.
We have 3 sprinter vans that have this engine and they are always flat out and we have only had a head gasket problem on one, all have exceeded 150,000 mile and still driver like new.
