Automatic transmission, gear selector problems

I am having quite a bit of dificulty with the gear selection lever on my 2000 G. It is VERY sticky some times going from Park to Reverse to Drive, and some times will not change from Reverse down to Drive or vice versa. I was wondering if anyone knows what the problem may be. Sometimes the selector lever is fine and it shifts like new, but most of the time recently it has been giving me alot of resistance.
Has anyone else expereinced this problem? I was taking apart the dash in a supermarket parking lot when it got reall stuck one day and a guy with a ML said that his SUV had had a similar problem and they had to replace the gear selector. I know there must be an easier route since it works fine sometimes and would appreciate anyones advice!

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your problem. Do you have any small (or large) children in the car? Perhaps they or someone else let something fall in there?

RE: Automatic transmission, gear selector problems

do a search on this... recently someone else had a problem with theirs too... but i think it was only getting it into the 4-3-2-1 sequences and not into the primary selectors, so it might not help.

Maybe check the ML pages (or maybe others like years vehicles) ... it's likely that many vehicles used this selector mechanism...
