Is it the best engine ever used in Gs?

RE: 300 DT

The G300DT, OM606.694 to be specific, is the most powerful of the old style indirect injection diesels to be put into the G. I wouldn't rate it as the most field maintainable though. In particular the large intake manifold covers access to practically anything on the left side of the engine compartment. That includes the injection pump and the left motor mount. It does require the EDC to keep the motor running. However I haven't heard of any failures, and electronic control simplifies the vaccuum plumbing while maximizing smoke-free power.

For strength *and* field maintainability, I think that the best would be the G290DT. That is from second hand knowledge though.

RE: 300 DT

Do you think its easy to change a 350 dt for a 300 dt in a G350, or there are many electronical and eletrical modifications?

cheers

I think it would be a nightmare if you tried to integrate the newer electronics. Just to start, there is an interlink between the engine, the instrument cluster and the transmission. You would need all of those plus some cable looms that look like small bushes.

As a wild flight of fancy, one might consider the following: Replace the 603 mechanicals with the 606 mechanicals. Keep the G350 injection pump, control systems. The 606 wastegate *closes* under vacuum. If the 603 works the same way then the boost control would be a straight plug in. You would also need the new bumper which has the intercooler embedded in it.

Well, it is a matter of choice ( like everything ).
I own a G350 and made some engine modifications ( cooling and so on ) with original MB parts and in my opinion, with that ( !! ) standard it is the best diesel around.
No electronics ( except ABS ), not fuel sensitive, good torque and bite and a bulletproof transmission.

The 300 TD has better comfort, lower tire noise, but the transmission is totally at it's limit ( avoid towing ), the turbo produces frequencies which weak the first part of the exhaust system and I've seen a few situations, where it was not possible to bring them back to regular run after electronic break down or turbo breakdown without the laptop. And the air intake is the lowest from all G Wagen, crossing rivers is a special chapter ....
But generally, a very good car.

Best engine in the G wagen ever is the 5.0L from 1998 until now.
