Diesel Conversion

Does anyone know if there is a thread on what is involved in converting a 460/M110 to diesel? I've got an 86 280GE that I can't seem to sell, so I was curious what is involved in a swap and if there is an engine that makes a swap efficient (300D?). I am in California and my car has not been to the smog lab, so I was thinking that converting it to diesel now might not be a bad idea. Thanks!

RE: Diesel Conversion

An engine from a similar era 300D turbo diesel (OM617A, I think) would drop in fairly easily. I'd put it in with the transmission from the donor car too. There are often differences between transmissions for diesel and gas MBs. AC plumbing might be an issue.

RE: Diesel Conversion

Always wondered about this but thought that you could not use a 280GE fitted chassis VIN with a diesel motor to get diesel cert reg in CA.

thoughts??

Yeah, some careful regulatory research would be needed. I recall some sort of change to the regulations that allowed motors of a same or later vintage to be installed.

All three of my cars are exempt so I forget about that angle.

RE: Diesel Conversion

I have been working on this for a while. The turbo diesel from the car (617a) will fall right in. The 300gd had a bigger oil pan but as long as you don't climb 45deg all afternoon that should not make much of a difference. The way I understand it they didn't put in the turbo diesel originally because they were afraid of the turbo hitting cold water when it was hot so as long as you are not in real deep water you should be fine. With the flywheel and motor mounts from a 300 GD, the car motor will bolt up to the Manuel trans, I am not sure about the auto. You need to increase the exhaust to 2 1/2". You also need to find someone good to sort out the tach and other controls. That’s about it
The turbo diesel with the 5sp seems to be the best drive train for the every day driver, low maintenance motor that could easily get 500,000 miles

RE: Diesel Conversion

The only problem with the 5-speed (Getreg) is that it will gernade very soon with that extra torque the turbo diesel produces. Otherwise, yes, it would be a great conversion. Decent power, decent efficiency, and good overdrive gears to keep the diesel from roaring.

RE: Diesel Conversion

This works if you get the right stuff with the engine.

If I add a few things:
G specific 300D engine mounts and pads are needed
G oil pan is needed.
"Ignition" switch with a vacum valve from 123 or 124.
The glow plug light exists in 280GE dash, you just have to wire it along with the glow plug unit.
Radiator and oil cooler is the same.
You can get rid of the fuel pump in the tank.
The diesel has a vacum pump.

Others can add more to this list

RE: Diesel Conversion

GOOD NEWS!!! I just spoke with a tech at the DMV and as long as the vehicle has a diesel engine and I have the receipts showing the chassis/engine discrepancy from the swap, the referee will put a sticker on it and it will be smog exempt. SO, is the 617a the best way to go? Could the A/C components be brought with the engine? I have a 4-speed auto tranny... I assume its best to bring the donor over. Will the G have much power with this engine? Thanks for all of your assistance... this has been a long, hard road for me!

RE: Diesel Conversion

Also, does anyone know which of the '84 or '85 mounts better? I believe the '85 has the turbo mounted slightly differently than the '84. I think 86 went to the 603??? I found an 83 for a good price, but I'm not sure if thats the right motor. Again, thanks!

RE: Diesel Conversion

I made that engine swap about 4 years ago, it’s a great upgrade from the 2.3 liter engine, but unfortunately there was no space left for the A/C.
