I know that some of the 400CDI's sold in Norway have been troubeled by diesel quality. Apparently CDI engines are very complicated and it does not take much contamination before the pump or whatnot gives in.
Also, turbos on the early models did not last as long as supposed.
And a climate-specific problem; condence could freeze if below a certain temperature (-15C I think), and thus contaminate the diesel causing the pump or injector thingies to fail.
Besides that, the 400CDI engine has a bottom end push that is just insane. You could probably set up a chiropractic buisness with nothing but a G400CDI and a few hundred meters of tarmac...

Yes, but only, when the engine works [:D]
I think, that engine won't become a member in the "Hall of Fame " of engine durability.
WHAT I REALLY CAN TELL YOU IS THAT THE G-400CDI CAN KICK G-500 ASS ANY TIME ....NOT ONLY IS QUIKER UP THE HILL BUT FUEL MILLEAGE...I GET 500KM IN THE CITY AND 700 KM AT HIGH WAY....
Is it true that
1) The engine is so big in relation to the compartment that it is very difficult to carry out any sort of repairs and hence very costly.
2) That the frame had to be modified from the standard 463 to fit the bigger engine?
3) Has the reliability of the electronics (which I understand is the main problem) been improved.
4) That many of the problems are a result of high-speed Autobahn driving?

Yes

Yes

Not really

thanks thomas,
so I guess a 1999 G300 DT would be a better bet?
Yes, better for the nerves [:)],that's the last one without real high tech.
Interestingly, the current G500/G320 have absolutely no problems, but the CDI Technology has nothing in common with the "old" diesels. Pure Diesel high tech with lots of electronic failures [B)].
