After sending the item and the "extra" cash you find that a certified bank check isn't any better than any other. It can take months to discover falsified checks.
It is a whole lot more than a one persona scam, it is an epidemic. It has been on my Porsche forums for a few months and I have a friend back in MN that was presented with a similar scam. He got that song and dance from a trucker passing through that wanted to buy his old drag car. Same story, someone owed him money, just send the extra several thousand back. I warned him, but he had already insisted the first check clear before forwarding money. Never heard from the guy again after that. It was also all email, no phone number, or direct conversations ever occurred after the initial contact.
Finally - something that I actually know what I'm talking about in this forum.
It's actually a widespread scam and happens quite a bit with used cars and other high ticket items. It almost always involves a cashiers check or certified check since these are very easy to counterfeit. Usually the presenter of the check gives it to the victim in an amount greater than the amount the victim is asking for. The victim is asked return the excess, usually via wire transfer but also on occasion by cashiers check. The trick is that the victims wire or cashiers check clears long before the counterfeit check is presented through the banking system and discovered as a fraud.
Bottom line - get verified funds via PayPal, wire transfer, or other form of immediate and verifiable funds, and ALWAYS in the exact amount required. Never remit any excess back to the buyer.
BT - currently a banking exec, ergo the authoritative tone of the message.
I knew it was suspicious...
anyway, who wants to buy my oldie 124 :-p

thanks for your price, i have discussed with my client he has finally accepted your price,he hopes the engine is
serviced
and oil changed too .He cant wait to see the car parked in his garage.
However,My client made out a certified cashiers check of($22000)
before he
travelled to japan on a business trip, for a previous car and its
shipment
charges etc,but it was unfortunately sold. The amount on the check he
deposited for the car is bigger than what should be paid to you now,
so the check is now meant for the total expenses which includes the
purchase
of your car,the pick up of the car from its present location and the
shipping charges/other necessary shipping arrangements. However he
has instructed us to carry on with this transaction. So you're required to
deduct the cost of your car ($14250)and send the balance of($7750) to
my client via western union money transfer to enable him offsett
shipping
charges/arrangements.once the transaction is concluded,My agent will
be coming for the pick up of the car from its present location, on an
open vehicle and then drive to a pre paid shipper for shipment, and also
conclude other necessary shipping arrangements.so you dont have to
bother yourself about the pick up and shipping arrangements, while title
papers and other necessary documets will be sent by you via fedex courier to my
customer.
pls provide the informations, your name and address for the check delivery, im waiting to recieve the details asap, thank you very much and have a nice day.
this same guy is usually trying to sell late model G's on autotrader.com, WAY below value...he had an 04G500 with <1000miles on it and was asking 40k because "his wife just got pregnant." same routine, same nonsense language...avoid at all costs.
