My car is turning into a Jaguar - more time in the shop then on the road.
My check gas cap warning comes on constantly followed by the check engine light and the reserve fuel indicator starts flashing. My gas cap isn't loose, it's been replaced twice, the EIS has been replaced, and a repair described as "IC was pinching dash panel -R+R IC to prevent damage". This all started when the dash wood was replaced back in February. This could be a coincidence - or not????? Usually this is in city driving after 2+ miles and 90% of the time it happens at a stop light.
Anybody else have this persistent problem? The SOP at the dealer seems to be trust what ever the diagnostic computer dictates vs. getting dirty and actually touching the car. I think every connection, hose, fitting, etc, of the fuel system needs to be manually checked. If nothing obvious is found, replacing the charcoal canister and/or purge valve sounds logical.
If anybody w/ a 2002/3/4 US G500 has had a similiar problem I would appreciate any info on the repair.
I don't know where this valve is physically located on the newer G's; but, on my 1999/2000 G500, it is mounted directly above the exhaust header. The heat seems to kill it pretty quickly - I've replaced two of them in the 22,000 miles I've driven it. I carry a spare, although its failure and error message are not an engine buster.

The car still ran fine, just annoying. It is located in the engine bay front left fender.

Same as my 99/00 G500. You're right about no problems running it and just being annoying. That's why I keep a spare. [}:)]

I have the same exact problem. I'm taking my '03 G500 to the dealership to get this fixed because it keeps setting off my check engine light (EVAP leak), but could someone please tell me what this "purge valve" is and its part number and location, so I can tell them exactly what to replace (yes, the techs at the local dealership are clueless).
and it took about 6 months for the dealer to track it down. at first they said it was because i left the car running when i got gas which i didn’t, But if you do that might be the problem.
After 6 months they replaced everything and problem was crack in what they called the "evaporator / charcoal canister"
They had no reason why it just cracked but it happed around christmas time so i dont know if some how water was on it and it froze or what.
On the 02 models you get this red screen of death that says something about gas lid open / leak or something.. i cant remember what it said but it tuned the hole dash red and would not go off. It was nice at night big red glowing squair in your face...

Yes i had the same problem...my dealer went through everything...replace gas cap...then charcoal cannister ...purge valve...but problem still persisted...then one day i am not sure what to call it he tried looking for a leak using smoke ...dont ask me what ...the service advisor tried to explain to me but Idid not understand...they found a small O-ring which was leaking ...replaced ...no more check engine light....he advices me not to top off gas during fill up...

On my 03 it does turn all red too but you can turn that off with the steering wheel buttons. All that remains is the flashing fuel reserve light which requires a restart to get rid of.
Anyway this seems to be a more complicated problem than I originally thought. I don't want to spend a small fortune at the dealership trying to get it diagnosed by replacing a bunch of parts.
Since this is an emissions issue (theoretically the car is leaking gasoline fumes into the atmosphere), is there any chance the dealership would be required to fix it under federal or state law?
