Found shavings on the drainplug from transfer case (pics)

While changing the transfer case fluid I found this...

After cleaning, this is what the drain plug is supposed to look like.

So my question is...is this a sign that the bearing is going or gone??

take care,
Tom

How long has it been since it was changed? Looks pretty much like normal wear with a dino gear oil.

Put Redline MT-90 in there and it'll probably stay clean as a whistle.

There is a small shop that stocks it about 5 miles from my house. There's also a second source in Atlanta.

Redline is not an MLM where every Harry Dick and Tom is selling it from their bedroom. Here are a couple of stocking distributors in NC:

BSR Products · Mooresville, NC · 800-572-6837

Page Distributing · Winston-Salem, NC · 336-724-0727

Here's one in VA:

O.G. Racing · Manassass, VA · 800-934-9112

I've also seen it available on the Web, too. Do a search on Redline.

I don't really know. Although the gear oil doesn't look black like an engine oil. It looks normal. Not sure if the color is any real indication...

Color isn't in a gear oil, as you don't have the engine combustion products in there like you do with the engine.

doesn't look too horrible Tom, of course no metal is best, but that's why there's a magnet, to keep that shrap out of the mix.

you can get the redline oil from a place on industrial ave just south of holly st on the east side of the road in San Carlos. I forgot their name, but they have it in the window (Redline sign)

there's a number of other places in the bay area.

or amsoil.com

RE: Found shavings on the drainplug from transfer case (pics)

This is what I found last year. But my 463 TC was broken (slipped out of S position) after being mistreated on the brake test bank.

Therefore I would not worry, seems pretty normal.

Sounds like someone replced the drain plug with a filler plug - or one from the diffs.
