Would Anyone know why my cv axle won't stay in? I'm going on my third install with a differnet retaining clip each time. I'm worried that the diferential may be worn. The axle goes in smooth and I hear the clip expand. After install I pull and tug ,it seems solid. Then when I get it out on the road after a few mile it pops out. The axel had a torn boot initallly so I decided to replace both front cv's The driver side went in without a problem. Anyone? Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I searched the forum and a few other places, but found nothing so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help, Or point me in the right direction. I live in Germany and have an '04 W163 ML350 Euro Spec. My expat contract is going to expire next summer and I was hoping I could bring the truck(SUV) back with me. Does anyone know?

1. Is it possible to import a Euro spec to the U.S? I assume it is, but is it cost prohibitive?? The Truck is paid for, it only has 65k Kilometers and runs like a champ..

2. Would I have to modify/change many things?
a. Spedo change from km/h to mp/h
b. Odometer Electronic - Can dealer change it to Miles??
c. Emissions, It has, but I have read that Euro specs allow the cat to be further away from the engine, Would I have to relocate it??

Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks,

It's pretty loaded, and everything that I know about is listed - apart from the COMAND SatNav system. Surely this was a 'factory-fitted option', same as the heated seats, leather, Bi-Xenon lights, for example?

Anyone know?

When I put the rear head rests down to open the top, or just for visual aid in the mirror, after about five minutes the rear head rests come up like bread in a toaster and there is a terrible "THUD".

Is this normal? Is there a way in which I can lock down the rear head rests?

Appreciate any help from anyone.
Thanks,

S55 control arm and ball joint replacement - what to do?

So the other day I was driving on the highway, with an S55 2001. I heard a bit of a screeching sound, and afterwards anytime I'd drive slowly or turn the steering wheel slowly, the front was making a creaking sound. This was especially true when going over bumps slowly. At speed on the highway there is no noise.

OK, so I took it to Mercedes and got it checked it. Both lower ball joints have a lot of "play" and wear on them, and the control arm too - they said the control arm bushings are a little bit cracked. (But not broken).

So the cost to replace those 3 parts is $1620. The parts themselves aren't expensive...but the labor is like 125 an hour. Is there anywhere legitimate that I can get this done cheaper? Any good indie Mercedes Techs in the NY tri-state area?

Also...strangely enough it was raining today and after they looked at it the noise stopped - Is it possible the water lubricated it a bit?

Is it safe to drive with the ball joints a bit worn? How long can I drive it for, or is it something that needs immediate attention?

Thanks!
