Hi all,

As I consider some of the things I would be wanting to put onto a G, a biggie is the winch. As such, given the mass of the G at almost 6,000 pounds it seems to me that you literally need about the largest winch you can get, something like this 15,000 pound capacity one

Warn Industries - Heavy-Weight Series: M15000

I have read that to be safe within tolerances you should have 3x your load in capacity - because you are likely pulling up a hill bogged in mud etc etc.

What are peoples thoughts on sizing? More relevantly, how difficult is it to get one attached to the G and installed by someone competent in North America? Can one thats attached to the front be detachable to use via the rear (assuming a hitch connection is there on the model in question)?

Any thoughts most welcome,

Regards

Hi all,

I am curious about this particular stretch of 'mud'. This past summer I took my truck into one of the National Parks in Utah and went on one of the back roads. The catch I was told about by the rangers are that the 'mud' is actually not mud but clay and quite slippery. It was mentioned that it sticks to your tires and can stop you in your tracks. Technically the mud is bentonite clay.

Well I had been driving and making good progress when I started to hit some wet patches on the road. It was indeed slick stuff and momentum played a fair role in blasting through a few slicks of it. Then I came across a river bed crossing. Now it wasn't flowing as you can see from the pictures but the stuff was really really slick. As I had no winch at the time and not fantastic off road tires (all seasons actually), I had to turn around.

You can see the extent of the run in the second shot. The first shot highlights the slope you would start climbing. The first also shows a rather ugly 'face' where the river water carved a ledge. Hitting this ledge with speed I would have worried about the suspension. Not having speed I would have worried about just not getting up - I am sure I could have go to the middle with momentum as it was down; it was the up that had me concerned not to mention that edge.

Sooooo, I turned around. The question is, with a G500/550, would you have just plowed across this?

Here are the shots...

I am the proud new owner of a 2005 G500 (70K miles), pewter in color (to match my 2005 SL500!). I am the 3rd owner of this apparently garage kept and near flawless beast (car was "Starmarked" after original owner put 58K miles on it), however, as with any used car, it is not quite perfect. So after hours of trolling this and other G-Wagen forums to no avail....here are some questions I hope can be answered:
1. The multi-contour drivers seat functions (ie-lumbar support/air cushion) do not work. No "air" is going to the control switches. I have inspected the entire system under the seat and under the hood...no leaks, no obvious problems. Anyone have this problem fixed before?
2. Would like to replace the drivers seat bottom (its a little worn). Anyone DIY'ed this,,,or know where to get the part(s) cheap? Mostly the leather is the issue....not the cushion underneath.
3. Would love to retrofit the following: a) ambient light pkg from MY 2010, b) MY2007 steering wheel/airbag/buttons, c) MY2007 Instrument cluster, d) DVD based COMAND system (anyone make this work?).
4. Also, has anyone added Bluetooth to a DB2 system without tel/linguatronic pre-installed? (ie- Argos system).
5. Update to "new style" chrome key (its cool looking!)

FYI, though this is my 1st G class, I am very familiar with the CLK & SL Classes, and therefore am pretty MB savy.....not a "noob"! ;-) Thanks, Rick.

Been to the dealer with this problem 4 times everytime they come up with some part to replace which "Will solve the problem" however in as little as a day the problem arises again. At times (seemingly in the colder weather 20-50c) when I go to start th truck I turn the key and the engine does not repond, no noise, no attempt to start, the enigine/starter just seems to ignore the process. I try again a few times by taking the key out and returning and after a handful of times it starts. I can't seem to figure out what is causing this issue. We have replaced the key to no resolve. Any thoughts or anyone with a similr issue? The problem is hard to duplicate but tends to happen a time or two a week.

Yeahs and have summoned the Great Vlad on this already he has spoken - the answer is no, but I am pretty desperate and am seeking any hopes/promise for this... I want to use Brabus exhaust - they say they make it for fitment of manufacture date 12/2000 so I was only a few months away, does it really make that big a difference??? I mean what EXACTLY is in the way?? Wouldnt you think some specialized muffler shop can custom cut the Brabus dual exhaust to "MAKE" it fit???

Hi all,

Part of my research into the G has me looking for crash test data. I know they are built like a tank but that doesn't necessarily mean that they do great in a crash test. Other than that advertisement that has one drive through a wall, are there any real results out there? I couldn't find any on the usual car sites for any model year.

I am also wondering, are these vehicles at risk from rear collisions given the location of the gas tank? It appears to me that the gas tank is right at the back down low and not within any kind of frame that I have seen. This would seem to be an exploding Pinto design risk. Am I missing something (like thinking the gas tank is actually the muffler)?

What are peoples thoughts on rollover? It would seem sensible driving would alleviate this. That said, you never know when you might need to make an emergency lane change.

Regards for any info/data on this.
I am very seriously considering a G. I have got approval from the 'boss' by sufficient amounts of grovelling . Timing is...

Hello everyone.

I am very seriously considering a G. I have got approval from the 'boss' by sufficient amounts of grovelling . Timing is still up in the air but possibly an early to mid next year kind of thing (at which point 2010s would be out I suspect).

Anyway, I don't think I will be able to pull off new (there is only so much grovelling one can do and eventually it loses its effectiveness ;). This doesn't bother me too much. That said, on an overall basis the 2009s seem to be very different from the 2005-2008's (I would be looking in 2005-2009 area). I gather the 2009s are now 7 speeds rather than 5s for instance. More potentially importantly is the large boost in horsepower.

So to frame my general questions I will highlight my ideas on planned usage to see if it makes any difference on answers

1) I plan on this being a primary vehicle and will use it for extensive roadtrips in North America (this past summer I did a trip of around 11,000 miles in a bit over a month for instance).

2) I want a vehicle that can go anywhere (within the context of what that means for 4x4s at least) - for instance this past summer I had to turn around after 65km of off road driving in a 4x4 pickup having come across a wash I would bet a G could have crossed. I want a vehicle that can get places like remote parts of national parks etc

3) I plan to load it up a bit - I would plan to put on a winch, rooftop tent, carry spare gas somehow (side tanks?), have gear in the bed etc. I am not wanting a blingmobile, I am primarily interested in its offroad abilities even if a lot of time isn't offroad

So with that said, how might that drive the decision process when confronting 2009s vs 2005-2008s?

Are the G500s somehow more capable offroad due to gearing or standard tire size (which I would change if need be) or weight?

Are the 550s more capable offroad due to the incremental horsepower?

How 'peppy' are the 500s generally? Would you as owners call them 'slow' feeling or decent or good?

Would the extra horsepower on the 550 be 'nice' or 'holycowfantastic' - keeping in mind you are going to be paying around 25,000 more based on my rough estimate to get into a 2009 from a 2005-2008 model.

These are my 'general' kind of questions to help me try and nail down what year to be focusing on. I will post other more specific questions in other threads to try and keep things easy to follow.

Just to open the can of worms - I have somewhat ruled out any G55s/amg variants on the hope that 2009s would be more than peppy enough and hopefully the 2005-2008s are decent. My gut tells me they are more designed for the 'bling' factor with lower chassis and side exhausts which would negatively impact their off road performance and possibly make for a louder/rougher/stiffer ride. Am I right here? I am not sure I would want to pony up the premium for one if I found a 2007 G500 and 2007 G55 with identical stats - not because the extra horsepower might not be fun but rather because the vehicle itself is somewhat compromised in its purpose by the setup. Am I being close to accurate here - no offence to any G55 owners! Oh, and would the 55s not be a lot more money to get worked on as well?

Regards and thanks for any feedback/ideas/comments

Hey everyone,

So I removed the third muffler that sits directly underneath the rear seats on my 2002 G500. I cut the pipes before they turn up to the third muffler. Now I have an exit for the exhaust on the left and right side but they are pointed straight back to the car. The sound is dramatic for just removing that one muffler and DONT want to go any louder. I did notice that the exhaust sputters when you give gas. What can be causing this to happen? Also the outlet for the exhaust where I cut it( cut the pipe right after the side mufflers) is very small. I would say it is maybe 1-1 1/2" outlet. I want the exhaust to exit out the sides so should I make the pipe after the muffler wider? Really curious why the exhaust has a sputter kind of effect(hope it is harmless)? Should have there been such a dramatic change in loudness with just removing the third muffler? Any help is greatly appreciated...Thanks
