Hi folks

My 97 SL500 suddenly started making a chattering noise when the engine is started from cold. The noise worsens considerably when the car is put into drive, but completely disappears after a few minutes of driving. I've also noticed now that sometimes when shifting from Park into Reverse the selector lever feels stiff and it takes the gear with a fairly loud clunk. At other times the selector lever is not stiff at all and there's no clunk when selecting reverse.

I'm not sure if the chattering noise and the gear problem are connected but they seem to have started together, although the chattering only happens first thing in the morning after the car has been left standing overnight whereas the gear selection issue happens at any time.

Any ideas?

Am finally getting around to respraying my front bumper and area. First step is to remove the bumper.

I have all the instructions to remove the bumper and all seems straight forward, except for one item. On the underneath of the car are 3 protective panels. 1 under the belly is held on with screws / bolts that are easy to remove. There are 2 smaller panels on the sides that also need to be removed.

The side panels are attached to the lower bumper with plastic rivets. My question is has anyone had success in removing the rivets without destroying them? I attempted to pull on one with just my fingers and it started breaking apart in my hand.

Any experience would be gladly appreciated.
Long story short I ordered both the relays hanging there from the dealer who told me the ones currently in my car are wrong. Can anyone tell me which relay will go in which spot and how to identify which relay is which.
The one most rearward was the stuck unit and produced a buzz under the car. I am assuming this is the fuel pump.
Thanks for any help you can assist me with.

I read thru the posts on here and finally found the actual window sync reset procedure. After a battery change, my top would only go 1/2 way up and stop.
This disabled the window operation. I figured out the process to raise and lower the top manually, a ll millimeter wrench to release the soft top cover and a 6 mm allen wrench to open up the windshield post latches. I put the top down. fully raised each window and held the switch in the up position for an extra few seconds and then shut off the motor and restarted the vehicle, pos. 2 and the top worked fine. My reward for believing in this forum for help.

Which Torque Wrench is next?

My torque wrench has torqued it's last torque, maybe I need a couple for a bigger range. So, which one is next?

My torque wrench has torqued it's last torque, maybe I need a couple for a bigger range. So, which one is next?

What is a good range for our R129's? Is there one wrench that would cover all that we need? Of course hoping I never need it for more than plugs and lugs.

Should it be in. lbs. or ft. lbs? The conversion in. lbs / 12 = ft. lbs. would make some small ft. lbs.

1/4" or 3/8" or 1/2"? Or just get adapters?

What about clicker style vs. beam? I am probably not coordinated enough to use the beam but I hear they are much more accurate, that the clickers may not hold calibration as well.

I shouldn't have researched this and just got what I had, of course it doesn't click anymore.

Maybe it really doesn't matter and I should go find a nice Coors Light - now comes the debate ... and it wont be about wrenches. :D

Hello,

I have a 1997 SL320 and have noticed a strange noise coming from somewhere in the drivetrain. It starts at around 55 mph and goes away when I lift the throttle. If I apply the throttle again, it comes back and makes a high pitched, fluttering sound and then stays constant until I lift the throttle or slow below 55 mph. Based on other posts I have read, this could be gear whine caused by worn bearings in the differential, but could it be the center support bearing? Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help.
