Ok, I have had this car since Tuesday and it ran fantastic Wednesday and Thursday, I guess to show me how nice it could run. This morning it fired up with a slight miss at idle, seemed to clear up after a couple of miles. Then after another startup it was missing at idle and though 2K rpm and then it smooth’s right out.

Seems to come and go while you are driving around.

I did put in some Techron cleaner in a new tank of 93 oct, wonder if some stirred up.

Car sat for 14 months.

Had a fresh tune-up before it was parked.

Checked for vacuum leaks at all connections in the motor compartment, found nothing at this time. Looks like most has been changed out and looks good. Sprayed connection and hose with some carb cleaner and found no leaks.

Guess I will put some more miles under it and see if it clears up.

MB owner for 3 days.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Well in pursuit of becoming one of the EPA's most wanted, I got to fail a couple more smog tests. I must have failed between 10-15in the last 6years. The shop who got my tested the car said it needed a new cat so 280$ later I pass! Yeah! Actually it will be 280$ for the cat + 90$ for the cert + $$$ for diagnostic = 2 years registration.

I think soon california is going to just come and seize my car for destruction as a preventive measure.

So for you folks without smog think about how lucky you are.

She's cooling off in the driveway. I parked the cobalt (work car) and took the SL to work. Im an appraiser. I drove it all around Dallas, Plano, Hurst and Richardson back to Lewisville (all over the DFW metroplex for non Dallasites) I was in stop and go traffic, I was cruisin at 75, Top up windows down. I did two appraisals and drove it just as I would my cobalt. No Problem! Besides paying 2.85 for super i had a blast and even saw a sweet red 380 go by on the highway ride home.

At this time of the year, it seems that I have always had problems starting my SL after short stops when car is hot.

Is there anyone else on the forum experiencing similar problems?

I have spent a lot of time trying to track this down, but I always come back to concluding that it is case of vapor locking. I had a discussion with an old VW mechanic in Germany. He tells me that over there, they KNOW the problem IS vapor locking and it occurs right in the injectors.

The problem really come down to two things:
- the winter gasoline we are sold.

In summer the gas companies go to great lengths to reduce volatility of the gas (for environmental reasons), but in Winter the opposite is true - cars need max volatility for sub zero starts, so the gas is modified.

- Our D-jets run at too low a pressure to stop vapor from forming during a heat soak while modern cars run at higher pressures and don't have the problem.

I did a test in which I varied the fuel pressure and did a series of similar trips with hot start after about 15min stop.

28 psig - car did not want to start at all. Had to pump like mad to get it going
31 psig - same symptoms, but not as bad.
35 psig - car started with no pumping - just stumbled a bit.

I have AFR gauge installed - mixture goes lean after hot start. Higher the pressure, sooner it gets back to normal.

I am thinking about boosting pressure slightly more and maybe installing a higher flow fuel pump that won't mind the higher pressure.

With the higher pressure, I have to adjust the MPS so as to bring AFR back in line.

Hi, Can someone tell me if the is supposed to be power at the small blue wire from the alternator. It has no volts out of it either with ign on or running.

A few weeks ago i replaced the alternator thinking it was faulty. Symptoms were the charge light never came on with the ignition on and the battery went flat.
Seems the alternator was ok but the bulb was blown. I replaced the bulb and all was good for a few days then the charge light went out again. The bulb is ok this time.
The #5 fuse is ok. Is there any relay in the bunch near the fuses that controls the charge light.

There is power to the instrument cluster on 2 terminals. I think 5 and 7 but i could be wrong on those numbers.

Thanks in advance

Hello all,
I spent last night searching this forum but failed to find the info that I need. Probably operator malfunction 8 )
Anyway, I have lost my dash lights on my recent purchase, 1972 450 SL. To start out the dash lights were real dim it looked like most of the lamps were shot, so like the newbie I am I pulled the cluster out as far as I could without disconnecting the Oil line and pulled the dash lights. Well one of the top lights with the long tubes was broken, no lamp and no springed retainer. When I put the cluster back in I had lost all lights on the instruments at all turn sigs etc.. work fine.
I read one thread that alluded to polarity being a factor, is that correct?
I saw several on jumping the Rheostat but I can't see any connections for the dash rheostat .
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Chas

Hey Guys,

So here's the story. My uncle has had a 1979 450SLC (5L) for a a few years now and it has just been sitting in the drive way. It runs and everything but no one is really driving it. Recently he has wanted to sell it but it hasn't got any buyers so he wants to junk it. I really like the car and I know, especially after reading the forums, that if we were to do that it would be a colossus waste.

So what I wanted to know is how much it generally costs to maintain this kind of car. I'm a university student working part-time so I don't have tons of money to put into it. I was going to buy a car anyway so if I get this one for free I can use the saved money to give it the TLC it deserves.

I'm mostly curious about how much gas the 5L would eat up, I know its going to be higher then today's cars but how much so. Also, the interior needs some work - specifically the dash. It has rips in it and the console is totally beat up. Any idea how much it would cost to replace/repair? Everything else on the car are minor fixes.

Should I take this on or would it be too much for a student? What do you think.

Thanks!

The rest of the day when it starts there is no rattle, even some times it does not happen the next day. Am i looking at a problem with the tensioner timing chain or both. The car has 81 k miles on it. It has done this for a long time. The last time a mechanic looked he said it looked ok. About a year ago. He has since retired and moved away.

I was recently just given this. No idea if it's really worth fixing up. The person who gave it to me spent a ton getting a mechanic to fix it up. It runs solid, but the idle is set really high to prevent it from stalling at regular idle. Paperwork says it's a 280CE but that doesn't seem right.
Overall, paint is pretty crappy. Pictures don't show the whole story. I honestly hate this color anyway and would much prefer some MB silver, but that'd look awful with the blue interior and soft top (soft top is in great condition btw). Rust spot on hard top needs fixing.

Service records in moon language. Pretty well documented to 100k kilometers. You can see when it made it's transition to the states.
Wood is in pretty crappy shape. Also pictured is my high-tech air conditioner that's honestly confusing enough I still haven't really figured it out.

Dash is in good shape but is an awful color like the rest of the car.
Anyway, what do you guys think? Junk?
