I had the failing pixel related problems with the 2000 E320 cluster. I ended up sending out the cluster to be repaired. Cluster finally came back last night and lo and behold all of the pixels are back! Looks great. Instructions said to turn to position 1 or "ignition on" for 25 minutes. I did so, but noticed that the temperature is now showing -36 degrees. Didn't really think too much of it as I thought the cluster needed to sync with the car.

Well, the 25 minutes is up and I start the car. ALL instrument warning lights are on (except the SRS light) also, I get he "Display Defective" with the lightning bolt in the center. In addition, the speedometer, tachometer and fuel gauge do not work at all.

I called the company and was instructed to disconnect the battery for 20 minutes. I did so, but that did not correct the problem. Now I am told to take the car to have the instrument codes read. Didn't think there was a scan tool for instrument codes? But I was futher instructed to take the car to autozone as they suspect something else is wrong with the car. I am very frustrated at the moment. Here is what I did from start to finish

1. Disconnected the negative battery terminal from the car
2. Waited 10 minutes, then removed the cluster
3. The negative cable was removed for about 4 days
4. I reconnected the cluster upon arrival then I reconnected the negative battery cable

Did I do something wrong as it need seems my cluster is dead? The company told me that if no codes are present, then I should call them back and they will look at it again. I am still baffled on this "instrument codes" that they are referring to.

Any advice you can provide would be very helpful as I am at a loss. Thanks.

I cleared some persistent codes (pending) prior to the test (P410, P0170 and P0173... please don't tell me it's the MAF because I changed it already). Anyway, I took it immediately to the smog station and it failed.

Question is, how many miles must I drive before these non-continuous monitors are in "ready" state?

Will I fail if I have a pending fault? I recall pending codes are not not considered fail codes, right?

As most of you know, last week the east coast got heavy amounts of rain. Trouble with my E320 started last weekend after the rain, so I'm blaming the hurricane.

You know that dialtone noise that you get when you turn the car on? Well, my problems started with that happening about every minute or so while the car was off. You could hear a speaker crackle then BEEEEEP. Over and over again.

I could still start the car and when I had it on, the beeping stopped. Well, then the car wouldn't start anymore. The interior lights quit working, the electric hatch latch quit working, and the ignition quit locking the key into place.

I poked around and found that the areas behind my rear wheel wells had flooded. I poked through the clogged drains and let the ares dry out for a while (2 days, actually). No change.

Today, I removed the electronics from the passenger side well and found that one of the d-sub connectors was completely caked in rusty clay goo. I dismantled the connector, cleaned the contacts, and replaced the housing. No change.

I still feel like the mobile telephone electronics are to blame as they're the ones with obvious water damage but I'm stuck now. Where should I look next?

Apologies for those who are already in the wise about this, but I thought this was interesting enough to share and maybe in the end save someone some...

Apologies for those who are already in the wise about this, but I thought this was interesting enough to share and maybe in the end save someone some $ and a lot of time...

The other day, my remotes stopped working. I had recently replaced the batteries so I knew they were not the issue. I pressed the buttons and the red lights flashed.

But, I had to use the mechanical key to lock/unlock the doors. Some suggested that the vacuum pump was bad. Possibly. But, I could lock/unlock all the doors when I inserted and twisted the mechanical key in the trunk lock. Not the vacuum pump.

Others suggested that perhaps a fuse was bad. I checked each and replaced as many as I could, just in case. Still nothing.

Here's where it gets weird... The window switches then stopped working. In addition, the seat adjustment controls on each front door stopped working. I couldn't open the trunk from the center console switch either.

After a few days of fumbling, I took it in to my trusted (non-dealership) mechanic. He used his diagnostics tool on the car and came up with 28 different codes. Unfortunately the tool doesn't tell him exactly where the problem was, just that it was a communications problem. I think it's called CAN, which is a synonym for something.

After following logic and trial/error, the breakdown in communication among the different affected switches, seemed to occur at the center console switch module. Unfortunately, for me anyway, this is a $440 MB part. He swapped it out and all is well again in E300 land.

Here are the lessons learned -- and there are 2: first, I found a re-manufactured or repaired part on eBay for about $120. Is it worth it to pay for a new part versus a used part? I'll leave that up to you and your budget. There's no right answer. The good news is, you have options.

The second lesson learned is that my mechanic showed me the old part he removed from my car. The previous owner had spilled coffee, soda, juice, or whatever, into the console at some point and that was the probable cause fo its failure. The thing was covered in sugary goo. I don't eat/drink in my car for the simple reason that mistakes can happen -- and this is a prime example. They can be EXPENSIVE mistakes. Just look at where the goofy MB designers placed the drink holder: directly above the console switch assembly!

My dad always had us eat our Carvel ice cream cones outside of his car for a reason. He was a smart man :)

I recently read "Enduring Passion", an interesting book on the MB brand, not the company itself, but the MB brand and how it evolved and endures today. But, one of the interesting things the author discusses was how in the 90's, MB went overboard and actually over engineered their cars to the point where they were too complicated. Case in point: one control assembly that when it goes brings down almost all of the electronics in a W210. That is illogical. I work in the IT business and when designing a system, that's something you'd never intentionally do!

Anyway, don't drink and drive. Not even Pepsi/Coke! And, if your stomach for risk/reward is a bit higher than mine, go the used parts route to save yourselves considerable money.

Bruce
