I have problem with my A-class AvantGrade 1998 Semi-Auto/Cluthless. Engine starts normally, but after awhile it start shaking, and rattling and then finally cut off. To keep the engine on, I've tried to give it max throttle, but doesn't help.
According to my wife who is actually driving and find the problem, the problem start appear after she made alot of gear change (N<->1) in traffic jam. After this car seems start shaking and loss power in gear 1.
When I am trying, it even becomes worst that shaking starts awhile after engine start. If the shaking/rattling finished, gear 1/Reverse works fine. No error indication lamp lights on.

Has someone ever seen similar problem. Please help..

Thanks.

Hi,

Hi,

I've recently asked for some advice on my problem, but things, I mean problems have developed since then. Don't know if they are related to each other or not, but they are pretty bloody annoying.

I bought this car (A160 99 reg) privately just over a month ago, and since day two it would occasionally stall when stopping and sometimes lose power, all especially when engine was warm. It got to the point when once it would always stall when idle, so unless my foot was on the accelerator, the engine would cut off! Having heard lots of different opinions by different mechanics and having checked basics like cables, spark plugs, filters etc I took it to a specialist garage. They pluged it to computer and few errors were shown - all related to engine sensors. All faulty parts replaced, no errors shown afterwards, problem solved...apparently...

The car wouldn't stall anymore and has been running smoothly since, but what I have noticed and am not sure if that is how it should work, is that sometimes when stopping the revs go down and down until they go to about 500 and then the engines struggles a bit and the revs kick back up to about 800.

Another thing that happened to me yesterday, I was doing about 20-30 mph and suddenly, the radio goes off, BAS/ESP and ABS lights go on, car slows down...I panic a bit, and after two seconds it all goes back to how it should be. What could cause that?

I do know I have one or possibly two punctured tyres, but the day it happened I just inflated them.

Also power steering makes funny noises, well not funny at all. The pump is way too laud, don't know if that's how it should be? There might be too much fluid in the system, but that's just a guess.

I shall also add that the battery has been recently replaced, and appart from that, the only other problems are slight clicking noise in right front wheel, faulty outside air temperature sensor...and sometimes when slowing down, I can feel the steering wheel suddenly is a bit more resistant to move than normally and if feels for a fraction of a second that something is holding it for me or I'm driving on train tracks.

I really hope somebody can advise on any of my problems. I'm a student and can't afford costly repairs. Many thanks

A cont. from my post on my starter problem.....

After having the starter replaced & the car still not starting up I decided to let the agents have a look at it. Diagnostic picked up that the L5 sensor was damaged aswell. Car started fine after it was replaced but again we picked up another fault... It was making a very loud rattling noise when on idle so after some advice from a few friends & a hectic quote from the agents for labour just to tel me what was causing the noise I had it towed to The Gearbox People. It turns out that my Flex Plate was cracked & was causing the racket. It has since been replaced & all is well with that side of the problem.
However I have noticed that my fan is running continuiously when the engine is on & after taking it back to the agents for a second diagnostic & reset the "Coolant level warning light" has gone off but fan still stays on.
Another warning light that has been on from before I had the starting problem is the
"Engine Diagnostic Malfunction Indicator Lamp" Which stays on from the time the car is started & starts Blinking after driving around for a while.
Nothing comes up on the diagnostic report with regard to this warning light & I was told by the agents that this is the first time that they have seen this warning light blink & are not sure what the problem could be.
If anyone can shed some light on either of these two problems I will be very greatful.

TIA.

Hi,
I wounder if anyone could help me, yesterday I replaced the hydrolic pump that operates the ACS gear box on my A-Class now I've put in the replacement pump the dread F sign in the dash board seemed to have disappeared but my gears are locked down (i.e. I cannot select a gear when the engine is running).

I did spend some time yesterday trying to bleed the system out any air, at one point I got the gears to work whilst the car hoisted up but when I dropped the car back on the ground gears locked up again. I would be grateful if someone could let me know an effective way to bleed the clutch system of air.

Thanks,

PS - I am DIY mechanic... found lofty's pages on A-class really useful... Plus can't really afford to take the Car to MB.

hello all,

New member who was wondering has anyone had the problems i'm encountering at the moment, i'v got a S reg A140 avant guarde.

the problem is with it cutting out/ stalling, last week it blew the ECM fuse causing the car to cut out and stall, i replaced the fuse and the car ran fine with no problems. that was last friday, then today whilst out in the car it lost all power and cut out, i checked the fuse but it was fine. the car turned over no problem but would not start. i then left the car for about 20 - 40 mins it starts no problem, it then ran for about 2 miles before it cut out again. then after half an hour or so it again started no problems and ran fine before cutting out.

i'v been to MB and changed the ecm & fuel pump relays with original MB parts and this has not cured it.

any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated before i take it into MB.

cheers Kev,

hi experts, im new to this site and hoping someone can give me some help.
i have a mercedes a160 semi auto and the lcd display only partially displays so i decided maybe i could clean up the contacts but only made things worse, now i need a replacement dash.. i visited a local scrapyard but all the dashes they had had many more bulb holders than mine, the plugs were the same but i was unable to take it away and try it. my car is year 2000 if this helps. are all a160 semi auto dashboards compatable and would it need reprogramming? cheers

just took instrument dash apart and it looks like my dash has leds instead of bulbs for many of the displays where as the scrapyard had dashes with all bulbs and no leds.could there have been a facelift or a year change were the instrument dash was changed..??
