crankcase ventilation system question

so i have broken hoses on my crankcase ventilation system and im also in the middle of some modifications and am thinking about redoing things. here...

so i have broken hoses on my crankcase ventilation system and im also in the middle of some modifications and am thinking about redoing things. here are my questions:

why do we have 3 hoses to the valve covers? i understand that 2 of them are suctions to remove vapors... but what is the 3rd one, the big one that only attaches to one side. i would imagine that it would be the fresh air tube, but it only goes to one valve cover and not both which doesnt make sense. is it just an additional suction? what is its purpose?

another question i have is about a pcv valve. its my understanding that inside the valve cover is a moisture separator and a diaphragm that controls the vacuum on the crankcase. will this valve close under zero vacuum like pcv valves? what if the valve covers are vented to atmosphere, will the valve release gasses when pressure in the crankcase gets higher than atmosphere?

Cold start/driveability problem 89 300e

Hi all! Working on a friend's 89 300e. Has 288,00 miles and a very poor (minimal at best) maintenance history. Takes multiple attempts to start cold, when it finally fires it has a low unstable idle and hesitates badly during warm up. Hot restart is fine, did idle somewhat roughly when hot.

Swapped known good OVP from my 89 300TE.
Smoke tested and repaired a couple of small vacuum leaks, replaced all injector and holder seals (leaking badly).
Replaced #6 wire (burnt from manifold)
Gave her 1/8 turn in (rich) on AFR adjustment---now idles great when hot.
Upper chamber pressures right at 5.5 bar, lower exactly .4 lower.
Inspected cap and rotor (not new but close to it)
Replaced partially restricted fuel filter.
Ohm'd coolant temp sensor, airflow sensor, throttle switch-- all ok
Cleaned ground connections at intake.
Checked cold start injector pulse.
Swapped known good FPR from my 300TE
Swapped EZL from my 300TE
Checked air flow "plate" position and for smooth movement
It does hold fuel pressure (2.5 bar IIRC) overnight
Ohm'd crankshaft sensor

A couple of observations; When cranking cold, has good spark, and fuel pressure. Will typically fire when RELEASING the key from the start position (ignition switch failing?) Sometimes the overhead dome lamp flickers (almost like an ignition pulse) when cranking cold. The EHA does have some fuel(?) moisture/residue at its harness connector. Although unplugging the EHA makes no difference on cold start (shouldn't that throw the KE into a strictly mechanical setup?)

Sorry for the length of this post but I wanted to include all the info/diagnostics. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. This one has me stumped!

Thanks

John

PS--debating whether to pin out the ecu next....but it wont fire off cold on "backup"....and I'm going to put a new EHA on tomorrow anyway because of the leak...

Well, my son just graduated from Duke and after hauling a trailer back to Atlanta, I noticed an unusual, rattling type noise from the engine bay. Hard to describe, but it seems to be engine related and not drivetrain.

After searching the forum, I came up with some potential sources for the noise.

1. Catalytic converter
2. Driveshaft center bearing
3. O2 sensor(s)
4. Front exhaust bracket

Noise can be detected after startup and seems loudest from the driver-side wheel-well. Increases with rpm. Most notable when engine under load (as in climbing a hill) and at higher rpms. I know it sounds crazy, but the closest thing I can compare it to is a bicycle wheel that has a deck of cards on the spokes..old-timers like me will remember that sound!

I'm going to have a local indy shop take a look at it for me, but what about you 'doctors'.....any prognosis ?

I sit in traffic a lot. Lately I've noticed that I keep hearing a relay clicking. At first I thought it might be coming from the engine compartment on the passenger side. But now I think its coming from under the floorboards on the passenger side. I know theres a lot of equipment under there from the time I was rewiring all the audio.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be the security system? Is there a plug I can pull to get rid of this nuisance?

Thanks.

So I have a new DIY project! I've become a pretty good at this with the help from the forum family, thanks everyone! Well my coupe decided to break my heart again. On the way home after lovly mothers day dinner, car started to want to stall, and was vibrating, luckly I was almost home so I took all the back road home slow.Soon after check engine light came on. Took it to near by mechanic and had them scanned the code, came back as bad maf sensor. I have already order an oem maf. I have looked at the maf and there is two connections one the twist off I can get off, how do I disconnect the little plug,I think its the one connected to the sensor. And there is two hose clamps,I guess both has to come off? It's real tight ,where maf is located.I would apprciate any advice you can give me! Another thing my auto level head lights doesn't work,I was wondering if the bad maf sensor can effect the light sensor? Any help would be apprciated! Thanks.
