It's time once again for the Santa Monica Sports Car Club's monthly First Friday Niter road rally, and this one is for the true driving enthusiast. We'll be attacking some of the most popular, most challenging roads in the canyons above Malibu...if you drive up there with any regularity, you'll probably be familiar with parts of this exciting course.
This is a time-speed-distance rally (not a race) that will challenge your driving precision, navigational skills and mental agility. Competitors will receive a set of directions at the start, and must follow the course at assigned speeds in order to arrive at hidden checkpoints exactly on time. This month's rally is a "tour" event, meaning there are no traps written into the rally to throw you off-course or off-time...this would be a perfect rally for a first-timer!
Although assigned speeds are within posted speed limits, there will be plenty of opportunities for spirited driving.
No previous experience or special equipment is required to compete; all you need is a navigator (preferably not someone prone to carsickness) a flashlight, a pen/pencil, and a watch that can be synchronized with official rally time.
Trophies will be awarded to top finishers in all classes. Novices compete in their own special class, so newbies don't run against veterans. SMSCC also offers "club" trophies when we get five or more cars from any given marque, so bring your friends!
Rallies start at the Bank of America rear parking lot in Mission Hills, corner of Devonshire and Sepulveda. Registration opens at 7 p.m., with a beginners' meeting at 7:40 (if it's your first time, plan on arriving early). First car is off at 8:01 p.m., with cars departing at one-minute intervals.
Entry fees are $10 per car for SCCA members. Non-members can purchase a weekend membership at the event for $8 per car.
