Had my 2005 SL350 serviced at a main dealer in Temple Fortune NW London. They said my front pads were 85% worn and rear 75% worn and wanted £400+ to replace. I told them to leave it and did another 3000 miles, after which I went to M-Only to get the pads replaced and low and behold the mechanic asked me why I was changing them when they were only half worn!!!!!

Of course I didnt change the Pads but gave the mechanic a nice tip and will definately use them in the future.

Its great to find such honesty in this day and age, and such a shame that I cant trust the main dealer!!!

It really makes you think !!

Mercedes Benz include in their original sale price for the SL range of models, an electronic device which alerts drivers with a dashboard warning light when the brake pads begin to reach the end their safe and useful life, yet a main MB dealer can pull a stroke as mentioned by Avney88.

I would tend to put more faith in my on-board warning systems that were designed around the vehicle.

No trees were harmed creating this message, however some electrons were very inconvenienced.

during my last A service for w209 Clk, i was told exactly the same thing. front 85% worn and rear 95% worn, they wanted about £400 pounds as well to replace them, i asked if lights would come on and they said that it would in about a week. its been 2 months of daily commuting and 1000 miles later, no sign of a light for brakes on my dash.
no wonder they are called merc "stealership".
customer service was excellent tho.
