Wheel advice needed S430 w220

I have just bought a 2000 S430 and it has the stock 16 inch wheels. The handbook lists an alternate 18 inch wheel, the AMG ET44 for the front and ET46 for the rear, 8.5 x 18 and 9.5 x 18 respectively.

However, I've been told I can fit alternate sizes and would really like to get the full story from someone that knows. So if there is anyone that can tell me what sizes I can fit without any modifications that will still be effective in 18 inch or above, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

What's the point of staggarding? wheels? Is it just for looks or handling or what?

RE: Wheel advice needed S430 w220

'Staggering' is used in some markets because it is possible to fit a wider rear wheel - it doesn't turn and so the wheelarch does not have to be larger.
Because it is possible to fit a larger rear wheel on some platforms, many customers choose it because they are told to!
In some markets, this practice is forbidden.
There is a massive choice of wheels both AMG and non-AMG in 18" and 19". The S500 'Didfa' and S600 forged 'Segin' wheel in 18" are nice looking, and are much lighter than the AMG wheels.

All genuine Mercedes wheels have funky names:

Thanks for the help guys. If only shipping and import duty wasn't so high from the US to the UK!

Thanks for all the help gentlemen. I think I am going to get the stagard AMG "double spoke" wheels w/ Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. Any suggestions about that?

for 99/100 drivers who have never seen what the stability control light looks like, wider rear wheels are fitting either because they are told or think that it is the right or only way to do things, or for aesthetic reasons.
I have never heard anyone comment on the on-limit balance of their Mercedes, ever..
