Forgive me, I'm a newbie...

What's the largest combo wheel/tire size for a W124 1987 300TD? I've heard 225/40-18 on 18x8 wheels. How will that affect the ride?

235 I think. With adjustments on the fender.

I would like to be able to install the wheel/tires without having to modify anything else. Any ideas?

then 225 is your safest bet. although I recommend 18X7.5
