What is the best way to remove the underbody plasticky/rubbery coating? In fact I am referring to the coating on the bottom half of an SL107's rear bumper assy.
I suppose a heat gun and a putty knife, but I don't know of anyone who has done this. Nor do I understand why you would want to remove it. These old 107's are rust prone enough as it is. It ain't chrome underneath, so unless you just want to make it shiny by painting it, I'd leave it alone.
Cleaning that area is no fun, but I finally got to the point that it looks pretty good and I keep it that way with 303 protectant.
Hi, the "skirt" of the rear bumper has been resprayed a number of times and probably has seen multiple layers of stoneguard-type material, not just the factory one. There are a couple of areas that need seeing to - of the putting new metal in type ;-). This will locally remove the protection so the only way to get everything looking as it should, would be to remove all of it and apply a new layer.
I was told blasting, but then the blasters told me that since it was rubbery, it would probably not come off. I was hoping that someone here would know of a chemical means of removing it, but the heatgun also makes sense.
Anyone else done this?
