Help w/ original pin striping - '87 560SL

Over the years it looks like my 560SL has been repainted in places. The two remaining areas that appear original are the rear fenders – the pin striping is faded. Actually, the blue pin striping is faded – it appears to be paint. I also polished some of it clean off the fender with a careless application of Meguiar’s 105. The red pin striping appears to be vinyl – it’s peeling at the ends. The attached photo is a close up of the right rear – I included some of the door so you can see what it should look like.

I would like to renew the pin striping on the two rear fenders to match the rest of the car. The MB dealer says they don’t have anything to do this. I had thought the striping was original on the car, since it had been maintained this way for so long. I was thinking about an aftermarket kit, but I don’t know where to look and I’m also concerned about color matching. Any leads on this are appreciated.

I had some rust work done in 2007, so I plan to contact the body shop that did it to see what they think. I would prefer a DIY solution, though. At a recent car show for our MB club, several people thought that I should remove ALL the pin striping. I still think it was original. Anyone out there know if side pin striping came on 560SL's back then???

Any feedback is appreciated!!!

I believe it was always a dealer installed option. Check locally to see if there is anyone who can either touch up or redo yours.

It is a personal preference, so do whatever makes you happy. I have noticed over the years that most of the 107 SL's do have pin stripes.

Here's some interesting previous opinions from the 107 section on pin stripes:

Thanks very much for the feedback. I've decided to stop being a cheap ______ and take the care back to Southwest Body in KCMO to have them work their magic on the stripes.

I had a dual red pinstripe on mine. I believe it was from the factory. Dark blue paint with grey interior, it didn't match up with anything so I took it off. I like it better this way, much cleaner appearance.
IMO, of course...

I didn’t live in the US back in those days and would visit about twice a year. It always called my attention and my wife’s as well, the pin striping US spec Mercedes had then – which we personally never liked – many times added to chrome rims, to top it off.

I do not know for sure if those were added in the US or came from the factory, but I am certain all models had them.

Having helped special order many global vehicles in those years for friends of mine, I knew the options list by heart and the pin striping has never been on the Mercedes option list.

If I were you, I would remove them. I think you’ll like your car better without them. Hope that helps.

Cheers

First, thanks to all who offered feedback.

After looking at dozens of photos of other white SL's with and /o pinstriping, I've decided to keep the stripes and get the rear fenders re-done to match the rest of the car. The shop that I go to came up with a great estimate for doing both the striping and refinishing the deck lid that has some old dents and 20 years of swirls.
