Rim oxidation... oh my!

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to salvage my CLK rims from what I thought to be oxidation where the previous owner had wheel weights attached for balancing.

Got my hands on some Blue Magic, and it did an AWESOME job cleaning them up just with a quick 5 second hand application, but unfortunately did nothing for the unsightly white blotches around the rim.

Is there any other product or method I could use to remove this? The surface is rougher than I originally thought, so I'm thinking some type of abrasive would be in order... looking for a DIY solution, and don't mind a weekend worth of manual labour

Attached are some pics, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

- Alex

No you can't do much, they are too far gone to clean. I had a Silverado a few years ago that had the same type of wheels. There is a clear coat sprayed over the shiny finish that you are seeing underneath. Once that clear coat peels, it exposes your finish and the process of oxidations takes over from there. There is no way to save them or clean them, besides replacement or a full refurb job. The oxidation will continue to spread until almost the entire wheel is engulfed if you don't do anything about the situation.

This is true. The oxidation you see is beneath the clear coat. The ONLY way to salvage these rims is to have them refinished. There are numerous reputable places that refurb rims and do quite a nice job on them such as TRUWHEEL

However, it could be cheaper to buy a new or used set. Price it out both ways.

you could sand down all 4 rims, primer and repaint, that is if you're really strapped for cash.

That is of no use to the poster. That covers curbing, which is NOT the case here.
