Polished Steel ?

Last night I noticed a small spot on my windshield trim that was worn off.I thought I would sand a little and apply some silver paint to mask it.To my
suprise I took my 3m spot sander and sanded the area lightly, and the dull
spot started to shine.I kept working at it and it blended better than what it
was.Afterwards I put some polish on it overnight and wiped off this morning.
It is not a high shine but better than what it was.Is this part polished steel
on my 1977 450sl ? or did I just do something else I was not suppose to do?

Thanks in advance for an answer
Bob
