Grease on windscreen

Hi guys

I do a lot of highway driving, lately we have had a LOT of rain after not having had rain for a while.

My windscreen has now got some awful greasy smears on it, I assume from the road grease, only apparent in the wet.

I have done a search and tried pure detergent, vinegar, windex (I know - don't use windex but I am getting desperate), Megs glass cleaner.

I don't have a polishing machine.

I have replaced the wiper blades.

At night, with light or heavy rain and the wipers going, it is almost impossible to see when there are headlights approaching from the other direction as it is just smears.

Any suggestions for how to remove this problem?

Help please!!!!!

I think I may have solved it, although, I will really have to wait for more rain to be sure.

I wound up using a product called "Shower Power' which my wife uses to clean the haze off the glass in the shower.

I have wet down the windscreen after cleaning it with this stuff and it doesn't appear to have the greasy streaks on it anymore - but time will tell.

Don't know if that stuff is sold anywhere else.

If you're not satisfied with that, Bon Ami is a great cleaner that is tougher than typical glass cleaners but it won't scratch. Works on mine. Good luck.

I've used 'Bar Keepers Friend" to clean windows, does a nice job when you need that annual deep cleaining. It's in the cleaning supplies section in the market.

that stuff really is great...also as far as glass goes can't any get simpler and more effective then good old rubbing alcohol to fight grease...and cheaper than a bottle of windex too.

Just be careful w/ paint and plastics.

Sorry about those problems mate.
Yes Barskeeper and Bon Ami are excellent for cleaning windshields/screens.
Do not use it on side mirrors otherwise it will put fine scratches in the mirrored surfaces.

However here in Florida we have Lovebugs that smash all over the front of the vehicle, windshield, paint etc. coupled with the Florida sun it bakes it in there real good.
I have used Barskeeper with COPIOUS amounts of water BEFORE, during and AFTER and it worked wonderfully.

If you do not have any of those available, use what I have in the past.

Acetone
or
90% Isopropyl Alcohol

Let us know how it turned out ok?!

Good Luck!

if you're washing the entire car, use ajax on the windows.

if you're just cleaning the windows only, try Zep or Red Max window cleaner.

Ummmm....have you considered that it's NOT on the exterior but rather the interior? As in a greasy film which accumulates from the interior gassing off. If you have tried cleaners, detergents and other various cleaners and it's still there then perhaps it's not where you think it is.

An interior film can distort on coming headlights and if not removed can be made worse in high humidity, such as rain. It's hard to notice in the day but can be seen at night as you drive or under certain light situations and various angles.

Most window cleaners make the film worse. Two microfiber towels, one damp and one dry should be all you need.
