Hey man, welcome to the forum

Bon Ami used to be good for scratched glass, but I have not used it for years. I'm with you for not wanting to replace the windshield - not only is that expensive, but they usually leak afterwards

Good luck,
M

The common glass polish is cerium oxide. You have a choice, you can buy the fancy stuff which is probably cerium oxide mixed with hand lotion and comes in a pretty bottle or you can buy the raw stuff and mix it with water yourself. Caswell Plating has a good cheap kit that you use with a good fast drill (not those wimpy cordless drills).

Kick it up a notch in price and Eastwood or AutoGlyn has a kit (notice as the price goes up, they don't name their key ingredient).

I wouldn't want to use toothpaste in my mouth that's strong enough to cut glass. Seriously, it has to be a very abrasive product to cut through a scratch and polish glass.

All toothpaste can polish just about anything to an extent. Yes its an abrasive and thats how it keeps your teeth white. Baking soda works too (a main ingredient in many tooth pastes). We are talking very fine abrasive here. which is what you need to polish a very smooth surface like glass. Although I would hesitate to polish scratches out of a windshield with no previous experience, I would suggest one of the kits above. I've used the eastwood deep scratch system to polish original mirrors for 356 Porsche's and is very difficult and time consuming. Curved glass mind you is an entirely different animal, much more difficult. If you wanna try the cheap back yard redneck toothpaste method, I'd reccomend an all natural type with few preservatives and such like Tom's of Maine.

Thanks for the welcome.

Someone recommended I take it to an Auto Glass shop to have it buffed. After several days of driving around aimlessly through the streets of Tampa, I finally was able to find a place that did it. They charged me $30 and it looks a helluva lot better than it did before. Still, I might get that kit from Caswell and see if I can take off some more.

I appreciate the feedback!

Flawless Glass Scratch Removal - Resurfacing

The trick to window scratch removal is to keep the tools moving constantly. If you stand still in one spot even for 5 seconds, you will get distortion, which looks worse than the scratches.
