Scratched by a napkin!

Okey I know that dry paper products aren't the best thing for your cars finish, but I was a bit shocked that using a Starbucks napkin would scratch my door pilar.

While walking back to my R350 after buying a frapp, I saw a few smudges on my door pilar. I quickly wiped the fingerprints off with a napkin only to notice I just put a number of fine scratches on my car. What a shock and disapointment, my first scratch.

I know it's a bit anal to react this way, but ya know, it's a new car. I'll get over it eventually. Even though I'm the only one in the world who will notice these scratches, any idea's on how I can restore this pilar to it's original lustre?

Thanks for your help!

Get some Meguiars ScratchX and soft microfiber towel to apply it. Clean the area first to get off any grit/dirt that may scratch it further. Rub the ScratchX with some pressure. You may have to do it 2 or 3 times to get it smooth. Then apply some form of wax to protect it.

Think about this....paper is nothing more than wood fibers.

"i buy loads of toilet paper for drying and waxing. I do this, as a cloth rag, will acumulate dirt. Constantly using a dirty rag will scratch your paint. It does not matter how clean you think your cloth rag is, it will still be full of fine particle crap that will score your paint

Regularly using & replacing toilet paper should mean you dont rub grit all over your paint and, in the long run, this should mean healthier paint"

I still can't get this horrible visual out of my memory!! What was this guy thinking?

I don't think you can compare wood chips to paper anymore than you can't compare raw cotton or raw polyster to microfiber or cotton terry towels. I bet I can cause the same marring with a terry cotton towel if you try and remove dirt or fingerprint oil without any form of lubricant (soapy water, detailing spray, etc.). But it's all a learning experience. I always carry detailing spray in my trunk, you never know when you have a big bird splat on your hood that I'm anxious to remove.

Yea, I agree with Bullwinkle, the fact that you applied pressure and dragged something across dry and uncleaned paint will most likely produce a scratch if there are dirt particles on it.

Exactly. Dry is the culprit, I cleaned the remaing pilars with water and a terry cloth towel. Not a single scratch.
