Wheel Cleaning

I have a C-class sport edition. Over the years my two front mags has stains from brake dust. It does not come off entirely. What can i use to clean them.

RE: Wheel Cleaning

You'll need to find out exactly what kind of finish is on your wheels. True "mag" wheels are uncoated magnesium, and can be a bear to clean, because the magnesium is porous and stains can literally soak into the surface of the wheel. Magnesium wheels are pretty rare as factory equipment, especially on more-recent cars, so you're probably dealing with some other kind of finish.

The other possibilities are uncoated aluminum (not likely), polished aluminum, anodized aluminum, clearcoated aluminum, or painted aluminum with a clearcoat over it. If you have steel wheels, they're probably painted, and may have a clearcoat as well.

Any of these finishes can be cleaned, but the procedure is different for each type of finish. If you've got uncoated magnesium or aluminum wheels, you might have to have them chemically cleaned and baked to get the stains under the surface to come out, though.

What year is your car, and are these the factory wheels? That would help narrow the choices down a lot.

RE: Wheel Cleaning

Those look like painted aluminum alloys with a clearcoating. There ARE spray-on/hose-off cleaners, but they're much too harsh to be safe for either you or your car. They're all either very acidic (low pH), or very caustic (high pH), and will strip off the clearcoat in a short amount of time.

If the brake dust stains haven't eaten through the clearcoat on your wheels, you should be able to wet the wheels with a hose, spray on some "Simple Green" cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes and then use a soft brush or cloth to rub away the stains. Be sure to keep the wheels wet with water and cleaner while you're wiping away the stains. You could try some mild paint polishing compound as well.

As long as the clearcoat is still intact, you can remove the stains be treating it the same way as you would the paint on the rest of your car.

Its expensive but you can put P21S Gel on it and leave it on overnight and then ...

get a wet brush and start brushing the brake dust spray them down and repeat it until its gone.

It might take a while but P21S will not hurt the wheels clear coat.

Make sure its GEL formula as it can set as oppose to most others that may eat away at the clear coat.
