I have a 3-month old CLK320 Cab with charcoal leather seats. I'm starting to notice a tiny amount of abrasion wear at the outboard seam on the driver's seat. This is simply from sliding in and out.
I'd like to deal with this somehow before it gets worse. Any ideas?
abrasion wear in a 3 month old car!!?? ...should not happen in my opinion. What does MB say? I wonder if the leather is covered under warranty if their is evidence for accelerated wear despite careful use?
Can you post some pics?
The indication of abrasion is very tiny. You can see it, but it has a long way to go before I would characterize it as a serious problem. For now, I applied a small amount of black paste shoe polish, and it completely gone. I plan to keep my eye on it.
I have a 3 month old CLK also. I have noticed that I am already getting an indentation in the seat pad that is taking longer and longer to return to normal. I am normal weight. Is any one else having this problem?
I would remove the shoe polish and don't tell the delaer it was used on the leather seats as they may claim you have damaged the leather seats with its use and void the warranty. Don't put it past the dealer to use this.
As for your seats they are most likely clear coated and not analine leather. They are different animals and need to be treated differently.
Analine leather is a seat in which you are cleaning and conditioning the pigmented color. Much like cleaning and sealing a single stage paint job. A clear coated seat is then much like cleaning and sealing a clear coated paint job.
I have recently tested for Top of the Line a wonderful leather treatment system. It is called "Leathermaster". They make a wonderful cleaner for both analine and coated leathers and their "Vital Conditioner" is perhaps the best conditioner I have ever used. It goes on very easy, no streaks left on black leather, and it contains a polymer to aide in "abrasion resistance"! Abrasion wear is the killer for all seats, especially on the side bolsters. A polymer helps your body to slide across the bolster instead of grabbing the bolster.
Jeans, belts, pagers, phones and PDA's all contribute to the wear and tear so remove these from your body as you enter and exit the car. Before you exit your car adjust the seat all the way back for any easier and less "seat stressful" exit. Leave it like that to enter the car and then use your memory switch to tune the seat to your desired location.
Again I highly recommend the Leathermaster products as they leave the seat conditioned but does not leave behind a greasy feel, does not darken leather nor does it attract dust. You can check the line out as www.topoftheline.com
Hope that helps,
Anthony
