What is the best way to "dust" a black car? My black SL500 picks up dust every day and I keep reading that a California duster leaves residue. I've heard compressed air is good but before I go out and buy a compressor I thought I'd try to get some advice on here.. Thanks, Mike
I use the california duster and it works very well for a quick touch up before driving off. I like it because it doesn't scratch the vehicle and you can use it anywhere, anytime!! Also, you can store it in the trunk so it is with you wherever you go. I also have the smaller, dash duster for my black dash. It also works great!!! But no, it is not as perfect as a car wash and or wax but again it is the perfect handy touch up.
I forgot to mention, I have a black with black nappa interior, 2005 SL600. I traded in my Black 2003 SL500 for it. I love black in this car and the duster does the trick. I have tried the wipes but they pick up the grit on the car as you wipe and that can cause scratching. With the duster, the grit seems to go into the duster and a few simple shakes after each use keeps it grit free!!
Dust is a fact of life and it will settle on your car no matter what.
The reason is that when you drive your car it is creating a positive charge, hence it becomes a big magnet. Find a way to reverse this and it won't be so bad.....and you'll be rich!
The CA duster is in my opinion a bad way to go about dusting your car as it can and does scratch the surface. Many believe that an Ostrich feather duster is better because their feathers have a natural positive charge to them and they attract dust. IMHO, dust is one of the negatives about owning a black car. The positive is that nothing looks as good as black when its clean[:)]

Anthony, good idea about the ostridge feather duster, Next time I see an ostridge I'll ask him to dust my car!! But, seriously Anthony the tiny quills in the feathers could be very dammaging to the surface of the car if you are not absolutely careful. Really the safest way to get the dust off is to wash the car but is is just not practical. I still sasy that the CA duster provides the quickest and most convenient way to keep the back car looking good as often as possible!! As for the scratches, I have not noticed any scratches that I could directly attribute to the duster. Further, simple waxing would remove any such minor scratches. so, I guess it's your choice folks! You'll have to try it for yourselves.
