foggy headlamps

I have this film type stuff on my headlights. Some people say that my headlights need to be cleaned and some saythat its heat/sun damage. anything that I can put on it to make it go away? the benz dealership recommended something by Miegulars. I wanted to get more insight before I purchase something

RE: foggy headlamps

Year, model?

Is it the surface peeling off, I think there is a hard coating that dies eventually, then the soft plastic gets foggy...

Megs has a plastic polish, but you need special stuff, search the web for "refinish plastic headlight" or somesuch...

RE: foggy headlamps

my wife's e320 had the same thing, hard surface peeled off and exposed soft plastic underneath. I think you could polish the soft plastic, but wonder how long it would last, and you could minimize the appearance of the 2 different materials, but I daresay you could not eliminate it.

Look some more on the web, there is some special stuff out there... a few more minutes with google and you'll find something.. there is a real expensive one that people swore by... also search this and the m b w o r l d . o r g forum..

RE: foggy headlamps

MB's have come with plastic headlights for a long time as do most cars. Every since they did away with sealed beam headlights and allowed halogen bulbs, most if not all companies switched their headlamp housing to plastic. It depends on what the plastic is, soft plastic like plexiglass is easy to polish with Meg's PlastX but polycarbonate like lexan is much, much harder and requires stronger stuff like sandpaper. Personally, I haven't had great success, it comes out better but not great, it was easier/nicer to get aftermarket headlights.

There's some tips on the autopia.org like here - http://autopia.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66510&highlight=headlights

but i'd try polishing them first. if that proves
satisfactory, you may want to consider having 3M
applique on them (about $100). I have clear outer
lens (vs factory fluted) so I'm going to have the 3M
done in a couple of weeks.

Use Mother,s aluminum polish on a piece of old towel. This works great.
