Seems like penny pinching extreme. Why not fill a bag at your local Salvation Army store (or equivalent). You get to 1) Keep the wife happy 'cos you're not stuffing up her washing machine, 2) You support an organisation that deserves your few dollars, and 3) you will buy real soft - prewashed - non scratch towels that nobody else wants which coincidentally are exactly what you need, and are real cheap.
Just a thought.

Since the exterior of my car only sees microfiber towels, or 100% cotton high quality bath towels with the trim removed and the edges serged, thats not a great option for me. Alot of towels have polyester in them for durability which is a no-no on the surface of your car.
I would never use some random towel that I dont know what its made of or where its been, on the surface of my car.
Quality towels carry a label offering their material makeup. Maybe you might feel a bit reserved about stopping outside such a shop in a Merc., so perhaps take an Asian make or ride a bicycle. Don't forget though that the label is not identifying itself as 100% cotton.
You'll save both on Dawn and serging and never again have to overly concerned about wash-rinse-spin cycles.
Long live a good laugh.
