I JUST REPLACED THE 3RD BRAKELIGHT ON OUR 2006 350 CLK.HOW TIGHT SHOULD THE 2 NUTS BE THAT TIGHTEN DOWN TO HOLD THE LIGHT IN PLACE.I DON'T WANT TO OVER TIGHTEN IT AND POSSIBLY BREAK IT.THX
You are correct not to over tighten it.
Push it in from the exterior and make sure it is correctly seated in position.
Do the nuts up hand tight first then use your spanner just to tighten them a little. You have to just do it by feel. Make them firm, but not tight.
They only need to hold it in position and make a good seal, any more than that and you increase the chance of the red plastic cracking again.
As a side note, my third brake light was replaced several years ago and, recently, had stopped working intermittently and throwing a "3rd Stop Light" warning and then resolving on its own. I removed the trunk liner and found the connector loose in its socket. A gentle push with a screwdriver and the problem was fixed. However, when I removed the liner, I discovered a pair of wires with male and female connectors that were not connected but wrapped in crumbling foam. Any ideas what these wires are for and whether they should be connected?
Hi Kwikdave,
There is only one wire that goes to the brake light.
Do all your other lights, like the licence plate lights, trunk light etc, work ok ?
If everything else works ok then I would just leave it.
I AGREE WITH BENZYLE. THAT DOES MAKE SINCE.I AM FAIRLY NEW TO MERCEDES BENZ.BENZYLE AND SOME OTHERS HAVE HELPED ME IN THE PAST AND I WANT TO THANK THEM FOR IT.I PUT MY 3RD BRAKE LIGHT IN BY MYSELF AND IT WORKS!
