ive noticed when lookup up parts for my 2001 clk320 their is both sohc and dohc interchange how can i tell what type of engine i have? is it coded in the vin or some way to tell by looking at the engine without removing valve covers? also what are the differences in power reliability ect?

lo
I think that you have been slightly confused there.... your CLK 320 has a M112 V6 engine, and all years are SOHC. This engine was fitted in CLKs from 1998 - 2004. From 2004 onwards this engine was replaced by M272, which is DOHC. The DOHC engines do produce more power, but that is not just due to that feature. Here are the major differences:

M112 SOHC V6, each cylinder has 2 sparkplugs, 3 valves.
Versions
E26 2.6L 125kW CLK 240
E32 3.2L 160kW CLK 320

M272 DOHC V6, each cylinder has 1 sparkplug. 4 valves.
Versions
E25 2.5L 150kW no CLK
E30 3.0L 170 kW CLK 280
E35 3.5L 200kW CLK 350

The V8 engine used in CLK for larger capacities (4.3L +) is the M113 which is also SOHC.
